Hi, I`ve been teaching ESL for a number of years, and I`m interested in going to Beijing to teach. Is there a good sized private tutoring market in beijing ? If so, how would an esl teacher market oneself? Are there certain cafe`s with bulletin boards, classifieds, and internet posting sights.............Thanks |

Thanks for what, buddy?
You apply for a job, get - perhaps - hired, then you are one of us.
Freelancing is not the way to go.
If I want to market Chinese way in Washington, D.C., I suppose I would have to obtain a busines licence in the first place. And, if I want to teach how to make wine I would have to be a legal immigrant, wouldn't I?
Why do you think you can just hop around the world and make money everywhere without being a regular? |

Yes there is a good market for tutoring in Beijing and I enjoy a good amount extra due to a biz market. Many friends of mine infact dont even have regualr jobs and instead just live as a tutor.
Dont listen to the nay-sayers and do what you want, where ever you want...so many on this forem just want to be cops and cant stand it when some one "cuts their own trail". |

Freelancing in Beijing offers you alot of flexibility in teaching. Some teachers go on a parttime job (to bring in a bit of regular cash) but then freelance at higher rates 130-250 RMB an hour, depending on your experience. It's usually at 150 RMB for a good english or business teacher with experience.
The best way is just to pick up a parttime job and then once you get a repuation, students start to know you you get offers along the way.
My wife who is Chinese and has alot of contacts and has brought alot of students my way. |

There is a good market for freelance teaching in Beijing. Also, teaching privates is generally more enjoyable and less stressful than dealing with a classroom situation. Once your in China and are ready to start teaching, create a teacher profile on:
www.myu.com.cn
It's free, and you can list all your details for students to browse when looking for a teacher / tutor. |

This is your personal take; in not a few cases "teaching privates" is extremely stressful.
Let's assume you don't have any reason to worry about the legal implications - teaching privates means you have to be better organised than Chinese employers manage to do.
Rake in the dough so that you do not have to remind them of their dues; make a teaching plan for a protracted period of time and charge a fair tuition.
It can be stressful to give in-house lessons in private businesses. The more professional you are the fewer takers there will be since most are interested in an easy entertainment sort of training. |

Let us hope you don't attempt to teach them relative clauses or the spelling of 'a' and 'lot'. |

I don't teach grammar or spelling. You can see why. I tell all my students this. |

what a hypocrite you are, today you wrote an another thread (Guangzho Puiching/Peizhang Commercial College): "I too do freelancing, but ..."
So freelancing is a way to go after all !
i'm glad i got you, so now i don't have to take you too seriously anymore and can just concentrate on constructive inputs instead of your constant condemnations. uff! what a relief.
cheers |
