I should be moving out next month and will not have dinner cooked for me and will be able to use more than the sandwich maker in the kitchen.
Right now, I generally eat lunch out but lately I have been buying sandwiches.

How much do you all spend on groceries per week or month?
I'm wondering how much I will actually save ...

keep in mind this little peace of advice. Disco, Carrefour, Jumbo and Norte are expensive. You may want to try Coto or even Wal Mart.
In my family we're 3 in total and our monthly groceries budget is around $ 400/500 pesos.

Wal mart is way to far that it would negate the money i save.
Will definitely try COTO though.

Are those costs just for food and drink? Do you eat really well?
It doesn't seem too expensive, but is more than I thought.

I'd say a single person should budget for 100 - 150 $ a month?? Don't ask me about my cooking though.

Our budget it may look cheap to you, but for local pockets is quite a figure!.
Yes, you can eat very well, of course you'll have to cook, that's the trick.
If you buy in a "rotiseria" I don't know if you're familiar with these places, you'll spend more money, but, you will not need to cook.
My advice, since we don't have the cupons system as in the US, each supermarket has their own offers and they publish them in papers that you can pick up at the very entrance of these places.
If you're a meat eater, Coto is a real good place to get meat, they have a Rotiseria area, where you can get salads, empanadas, pies, grilled or baked chicken, and many other items. Usually they are cheaper than a regular Rotiseria but still, it's cheaper to buy the ingredients.
Another advice, if you can try to avoid the brand names, you'll save some money by doing this.
Also, I think you're int the Belgrano area, not quite sure if you'll be staying there or not, but, if you have a friend with a car, you may want to go to Wal Mart, if not I cand rive you there when I do my groceries not a problem.

we go shopping about every 5 days for 3 of us in the house and it is about $65-$75 (pesos - all prices in pesos from now on) per trip. i don't feel like doing the math...

but we eat pretty well, try to get a little of everything and an indulgence or two per person. the most expensive things we buy are the imports - granola, lays chips, coke, etc. things like meat, produce, pasta, yogurt, wine, etc. are really cheap. (yummy juice oranges are less than $1 per KILO!!). finding good substitutes is key... a suitable spicy substitute for tabasco sauce ($14 for a tiny bottle!) is aji sauce ($4 for a 240g bottle), for example.

also cool about coto (and most of the other places as far as i know) is that they DELIVER FREE OF CHARGE to your door if you spend $50 (pesos).

the brand name thing is definately true - i took my first trip to the supermarket yesterday and of the 2 boxes of cereal i bought, the honey nut cheerios-type cereal cost $4 and the Quaker oat squares were $9.50

i know its a bit more expensive but my choice is Disco. the stuff seemed nicer. Maybe we should get together and check out who cooks the best? You know who'll get top marks!? Moi! Ok dream on jenn.

I spend about $25 a week on groceries. Milk in a bag is about $1.35, BIG bag of cornflakes which lasts me 2 weeks is about $4. A loaf of good whole wheat bread is about $3, can of tuna in water is about $2 (I get the cheap brand). Cheese (unsliced) starts around $2.50. I get veggies and fruit at the little markets which can be cheaper. I get meat at the meat stores, which are cheaper. 1 kilo ground beef is around $6. 1 kilo chicken breast without bones is about $8. Good granola bars about $3 - $4. Bag of pasta $2 - $3. Small bag of rice $2. And I usually go to the Asian-owned markets as they are cheaper.

All $$ in pesos.
