Are these the most pathetic offerings you've ever seen or what?! Last week I travelled to the other side of Kansai to interview at this 'school' that offered me 1,ooo yen an hour (no travel expenses paid, of course). But the really good part was that the contract stated you would have to pay them 5,000 yen if you were late and if you took a day off (ie. sickie) without three days notice, you would have to pay them 10,000 yen.

Out of desperation I've also sat through the sales pitches of Gaba (1,350 yen p hr-see other postings on this site) and Berlitz (pay a little higher but have a really @3*ty contract). This corporate stuff is really getting me down. What ever happened to e-d-u-c-a-t-i-o-n?

Whoever said it was the worst time to look for a job wasn't joking!
Please let me know if anyone has heard of any decent work. I just want to keep myself afloat until the job market picks up again.

Although it seems you are wise enough not to go to work for such a monkey outfit, please do be aware that such fines are frequently illegal under Japanese labour law. For instance, prohibition of a contract, which describes the payment of a penalty, damages, etc. for non-fulfillment of a contract.
Making a contract which fixes in advance the payment of a penalty or damages for non-fulfillment of a contract on the part of the workers such as resignation before the completion of the contract period, etc. (Article 16 of the Labour Standards Law).

And, from the General Union website,

Can I be fined for being late?
First we must clarify what a fine is. For example, if you came to work 5 minutes late and your employer didn't pay you for those 5 minutes, this would not be a fine. A fine is the amount subtracted from your pay over and above the deduction for the time you were late.
Even though the General Union considers fines to be unfair, they are legal if they fall within certain limits. The fine for one instance of lateness cannot exceed half a day's pay, and the total fines in a month cannot exceed 10% of your monthly salary (Article 91).
One important factor when deciding if your company has the right to fine you (or suspend you without pay) is whether your company has properly registered working rules (please see the question on working rules). If your company doesn't have working rules then they cannot fine you for lateness. Moreover, courts have ruled that procedural fairness is also necessary. A minimum condition is that the penalized person be given the opportunity to defend himself or herself. If this is not allowed, the fine could be ruled an "abuse of the right to impose discipline".

I think the difficulties you're having are partially related to the fact that the Osaka/Kansai area simply doesn't have many jobs to go around in general. I've noticed this, as have many of my friends who were also looking for work. Most of the jobs advertised are in the Tokyo/Chiba/Yokohama/Kanagawa area, not in Osaka/Kyoto/Kobe. You would think that the second largest metropolitan area in Japan would have comparably plentiful job postings, but I really don't think so. The Kansai Flea Market might be a good place to start though. (It comes out every Thursday, I believe.) Networking and plain dumb luck also help.

Also, keep in mind that taking jobs that pay really terrible wages only drives down the salaries for all of us because we're essentially subsidizing their miserable salary offerings by taking their jobs and implicitly saying it's okay to be paid so little.

Tokyo isn't much better. Earlier this week I saw one f/t ALT job being advertised as 180,000 yen a month in Kanegawa, or 200,000 with the bonuses included.

Apartment rent not payed for by the school? I'd take a 200,000 job, as long as they give me a free and decent apartment to live in.

Nismo, I would say the chances of a free apartment in this day and age are slim to non-existent. AEON will subsidise your rent, NOVA will charge you through the nose if you use theirs. I dont know of anywhere that employers pay all your rent as well as key money. Wages are going down as that is what people are prepared to accept to get jobs here, and employers know they dont have to pay the wages they used to. Employers will not pay any more than they absolutely have to, and rent is not one of them.
