This evolves from a request I posted about pansiyons /hotels in Marmaris.

It occurred to me that we could contribute personal recommendations of accommodation, resorts, sites, bars, restaurants, activities etc etc

Maybe this should be part of the master index of Turkey (ref dmb and others) but that is quite a long and unwieldy (no offence, chaps) list and I thought this could be more discursive and something that people could browse through and contribute to whilst in chat mode.

I'll start and let's see how it goes.

I recently had a very pleasant couple of days in Assos (Canakkale).

We stayed in the Dolunay Pansiyon which is central (for the upper, village, archaeological level).

Rooms cost 15 YTL per person including an excellent breakfast. The accommodation was simple but clean and comfortable. Bathroom (hot & cold running water) en suite. No air conditioning but it's an old building with foot thick stone walls so none needed.

I would wholeheartedly recommend it.

kind of related to this, I am wondering how many people here use mymerhaba? I find it rather unwieldy, though I like the weekly e-mails.

I am also wondering if people here use craig's list (aside from the malicious job posting by you know who, which I had deleted).

I'm not sure if we should have a sticky as places change and close down all the time. I could recommend places I have stayed that I am not even sure if they exist anymore. For example one of the best places I ever stayed was whynot campsite in Marmaris(anyone remember whynot cafe in Cihangir? same people.) But I know that S and B have sold up and are back in the UK. Recently I recommended a place to a friend in Sile.... It was open last year, not this year.

In saying that places I know that are open at the moment. Paradise Garden in Gumusluk(a friend is just back) and Sarnic in Akcay(I saw the owners son a couple of nights ago). Both friendly, clean and cheap(and right on the sea front)

Oh an afterthought. If anyone happens to find themselves in Mardin. Forget staying in a pansiyon. A few km out of town there is an ancient Armeic(sp) Monastry. They will feed you and give you a place to sleep for the night..... for free. A nice experience too.

I check mymerhaba quite often, mainly to see who and what is in town.
(psst don't tell molly but I have recruited the odd teacher from the classifieds)

In Diyarbakir we stayed at the Balkar Otel, which is near the walls and on the edge of the old town. It was 50TL/night for the both of us including breakfast of course. The room was very nice, clean, newly painted, air conditioned.

In Kahta we stayed at the Zeus otel, which is quite nice, a beautiful green garden and a swimming pool. They wanted 90TL/night including dinner and breakfast, but we talked them down to 70 with no dinner. New hotel, clean rooms, air con, very helpful people. They arranged a Nemrut tour for only us that went down from 120TL to 90, only slightly more than the other tours.

One place to stay away from in Kahta is the Commegene Pansyon, which is pretty cruddy, basic, stinky bathrooms, and a slimy guy runs it. And not all that cheap for what you get-- 40TL/night.
