I was wondering if you'd know of places to eat that are reasonably priced. For ex: a good western breakfast at Maxime's for under 20HKD.
I know a cheap meal just doesn't exist here, but I'd like to find a few places that aren't in the 80/100HKD per person range. If possible.
Thanks
I'll be visiting for a week.
Now I'll look in the archives for things to do and places to see.

At that price its gotta be worth a look at the ground floor of chungking mansions (Nathan Rd Kowloon)for sure.
There are plenty of street stalls where you can get a nosebag for that kind of money though obviously you will have to like noodle soup a LOT.
Kakalok in Kowloon (out of mansions straight over) is a bit of a traveller mainstay and its probably not possible to spend more than 30HK on anything there. There are also plenty of lunchbox deals going from resturants in the area in the daytime and these can be excellent value for money. Many of the lower paid citizens of HK have that sort of budget for lunch and stuff so it can be done. Mind you as a lifelong total foody its got to be said that HK is right up there on the scoff scale and if you have a little more to spend the quality can rise exponentially for only a little extra.
Happy trails.

I guess it also depends on whether you want to sit down in a restaurant or if you're willing to eat outside i.e. no aircon.
I have found excellent hot dogs (not the sausage in a bun ones, but real nice hotdogs with mustard and tomato and lettuce) from small bakeries - HK$5 each. For the same price you can find a selection of different stuffed bun related food - tuna, curry etc.
7-11 has some OK rice and meat/veg dishes that you can heat up yourself for around HK$ 13-HK$18 or even as low as HK$ 10 for rice and chicken - very big on the rice, very small on the chicken but very filling.
Mix that with a HK$ 6 big gulp (better than paying HK$ 5 for 330ml (still 7-11) and you're flying. If you're here for only a week and you need to budget you could get by on that I reckon.
One tip though - bring multi-vitamins with you and take two a day. |

go to the big supermarkets - Welcome and Park and Shop.
They have ready cooked food - chinese style with rice to take away. Extremely cheap and a good range.
Also buy ready cooked bbq duck and pork at the supermarket - not a bad feed on some bread rolls.
also how about bananas? staple diet for breakfast/lunch with some bread when you are watching the pennies. go to the markets.
eat for free at the "posh" supermarkets - e.g. Taste at Kowloon Tong and City-Super at Central. They always have promotions. Just keep pushing your trolley and trying the free stuff.
Do let us know how you get on. |
