Although i agree that the length of some HS skirts is pretty obscene, i don't consider it to be a big deal. Admittedly they are usually breaking school rules, but they could be doing much worse. At that age people break rules, and are becoming aware of their sexuality...... But if you consider the behaviour of an English school kid (I'm not sure about the US or Canada) at 16-17 then 99% of Japanese students are angels. From my experience very few HS students have experimented with underage drinking, smoking or drugs etc etc... so i think they can be forgiven for wearing their skirts a little short. I think a more worrying problem is some of the perverts that would take advantage of these girls (admittedly these girls can be very attractive).

Anyway, i'm starting to sound like the oldest 23 y/o in the world!! but to summarise they could be doing much worse things

P.S. if anyone has the underage pregnancy figures for japan i would be interested to see them. Maybe it is a problem here, but is hidden away like many sex related issues

I think it's a huge deal... Sex ed is truly primitive in this country. Over 13% of 16-18yr old girls have chlamydia. That's just over 2 girls in each of your classes (of 40 kids).

Give em the pot instead... They won't get a disease at least... Just a bad case of the munchies. (I'm being sarcastic, btw).

Anyway, here's a good article to read about it.

http://search.japantimes.co.jp/print/news/nn12-2004/nn20041203a4.htm

In collecting its data, the ministry research team questioned 5,700 male and female students from 13 high schools in prefectures whose teen abortion rates were about the same as the nationwide average. The survey was conducted over a period of roughly one year, beginning in the autumn of 2003. Students were asked to anonymously fill in questionnaires and provide urine samples.

The survey found 31. 1 percent of male high school students and 43.6 percent of female high school students had experienced sex. Of these, 6.7 percent of male students and 13.1 percent of female students were infected with chlamydia. The overall infection rate among students was 10.6 percent.

Depending on which group of high schoolers you look at, many of them already do drink and/or smoke.

It's unfortunate more perverts don't take advantage of these girls, at least then maybe we would see some changes being made, compared to the inspections that are really doing nothing now.

...and It's always hard to do something about it when "Mommy" supports you, becuz back in her day, she was just as clueless.

"Sex ed is truly primitive in this country"

I totally agree, this is the problem.... not the length of somebodys skirt!
Japans attitude to STD sucks, it is a massive social issue.

My point is this.... what has the length of skirt got to do with your chances of catching chlamydia.... girls with skirts below the knees are just as likely to catch it, or is the risk of infection proportional to the length of a girls skirt.

I think that stricter skirt regulations will have minimal impact on any std problems..... there are much bigger issues at hand. So if they want short skirts..... let them

It seems this skirt issue shows many of us pushing our values on the host culture. If I had a daughter who wore such a short skirt I'd get pretty riled up, but I'm not going to do so for someone elses.

STDs aren't about values, they're about public health.

I've seen studies showing sex statistics in small town America which dwarf the ones presented earlier.

I think it is more of a fashion thing. Most of the school girls I see aren't really that "sexual" if you know what I mean. Sure their skirts are short, but they don't know how to walk or act now that their skirts are short. They sit with legs wide open on the trains, chew their gum with their mouths open making godannoying noises and don't get me started on the inablity to wear heels.

If they were wearing short skirts and strutting their stuff and making passes at everything with legs... THAT would be a problem. Right now it's just mornic fashion that makes them sick in winter and targets for perverts all year round.

p.s. Agree 100% on the STD topic.

Homersimpson I just assumed there would be a standard policy for school dress for so many skirt lengths to be short. I have seen other uniforms not so short, so I was wondering if the dress policy had a lot of flexibility.

Haven`t there been objections by members of the public here about the length of the dresses or are there some aspects of Japanese culture that I have yet to learn.

Maybe the girls are pandering to men`s hidden fantasies, and the women go along with it, because it gives the husbands a form of sexual release so they don`t go looking for it elsewhere.

I don`t know, but there must be some thing in the Japanese psyche that feeds off this stuff

Some of the fat ones I have noticed would be better off to not try and keep up with everyone else`s fashions in their school

I work in a private high school. Skirt lengths are the least of the worries. Kids wear makeup, dye their hair, wear jewelry, dress sloppily, wear non-regulation socks and sweaters, etc.

Girls roll up their skirts. It's a J high school fashion thing. Teachers have bigger fish to fry than to chase a short-skirted girl down and scold her. Besides, there is no punishment system in schools here anyway.

And, just in case you believe everything you read, look at this and then reread what I just wrote.
Most high schools require the wearing of a uniform, and these reinforce the apparent homogeneity of the group. The boys' uniforms in particular hark back to those borrowed from European schools and worn 75 years ago, and the girls' uniforms also seem to an American rather old fashioned -- navy-blue middy blouses or blazers and pleated skirts. Like teenagers anywhere, Japanese high schoolers attempt to put their own stamp on their uniforms and, depending on peer group fashion, may lengthen a skirt, roll up a collar, or add pink socks to their garb. It should be noted, however, that flagrant abuse of the uniform is regarded as an act of "school violence," and so these individualizations are for the most part very subtle.

In fact, the following article is closer to the mark.

The following description of the short skirts from http://j-views.com/content/pop-culture/LooseSocks/ is priceless

Some of the girls are still wearing very short skirts (in some case, they might be mistaken for wide belts) or really short shorts -- little more than bikini bottoms.

Why do Japanese men have a fetish for girls in sailor uniforms?

That's pretty horrifying. Maybe some of these girls are also in the porn business.

Anybody notice how many views this thread has in relation to the amount of replies? It seems that the view rate is about three or four times as high as that of the other current threads. Of course nobody wants to admit to being interested in this particular topic, but the proof is in the view count. Tee hee! Very Happy
