I found myself a little surprised by the low price of a recent purchase, but realized that I might be out of touch with costs back home or elsewhere for being in Mexico so long. Can anyone help with a comparison for where you are?
3 litres of beer (3 separate bottles)
1 pound (half kilo) of Oaxaca cheese (which is a stringy white cheese...nothing highbrow)
1 package microwave popcorn
A loaf of white bread
Total cost was 9 usd. What would that be where you are?

Where I live (a resort town on the Oaxacan coast) I would pay somewhat more, say about $11-12 US. |

Six pack of p*ss is between NZD 6 and NZD 12.
500 grams of non-highbrow cheese is NZD 5 at Pak 'n' Save.
Microwave popcorn? Dunno, never bought the stuff.
A loaf of white bread can be had for NZD 0.89 at Coupland's Bakery.
Current exchange rate is NZD 1 = USD 0.70
How much is a case of Pacifico or Sol at the sub-agencia? |

Ecuador:
3 litres of beer (5 seperate bottles) $3.75
1/2 kilo inedible Ecuadorian cheese. $4.00
1 Package Microwave popcorn: How the heck should I know, I haven't got a microwave? Half a kilo, unpopped, regular popcorn, $0.49
1 loaf plain, sliced white bread. (Yuck) $1.25
1 Loaf, decent whole wheat bread: $1.50

liter-sized bottles of beer (Corona, Sol, Superior, etc.) with return of empty bottles at neighborhood agencias = 15 pesos per bottle
cheese = anywhere between 15 and 20 pesos for a half kilo of okay-but-not-great types of cheese (didn't see "Oaxaca cheese" in the supermarket)
microwave popcorn = 3.50 to 5.50 pesos per package
white bread = Wonder or Bimbo between 9 and 12 pesos per loaf depending on size
(You can figure out the math for conversion to USD.) |

From Canada.
Beers would range from 2-3 dollars each from the liquor store or 3-5 from a bar. I know coronas are around 4-5 each at a pub.
I don't know what kind of cheese that is so i can't comment on that.
A single bag of microwave popcorn would be $1.
And a bag of bread (depending on the quality) is $1.29 - $3.
Grand total of approx: $13 minus the cheese.
Those are all canadian prices too, so you can do the math. |

Plus GST. Oh how I do not miss GST. Mind you, we have IVA here, but it's nicely hidden away in the price, Mr. Mulroney. |

Here in pokey lil' ol' New Zealand our 12.5% GST is built into the price so it's not as noticible. Sneaky buggers...

I'd say you got a bargain. All those goodies in the US would have run you close to $15, depending on your taste in beer.
Well done. |

I missed this the first time. For 355 ml bottles, right? I meant litre-bottles. I think the biggest we have up north are quarts, except for those cute little Saporo kegs. |
