I am planning on coming to BA to look for work in February. I was going to buy a one-way ticket, but according to the Argentine consolate in NY, unless I have a return ticket, I will "be stuck in the BA airport." I told them that I planned on travelling by bus into Montevideo, but they said it doesnt matter. I need a round-trip ticket.
Is this true? Do I need a return flight?

You won't have any problem when you get to argentina but you may not be allowed onto flight in the States. Buy a fully refundable air ticket to uruguay or chile or somewhere and cash it in when you arrive. This is enough to be let on the flight. It's the safest way of doing it and you'll avoid a huge amount of hassle at the airport IF they challenge you over it (probably a 50-50 chance of this happening).

Thanks for the tip. I found a relatively cheap flight on Exito Travel... any suggestions for where to find a fully refundable ticket from BsAs to Montevideo?

Another tip, when my husband was planning to come to Argentina to meet me he was wanting to buy a one-way ticket, but he was told that round tickets are cheaper. So he got a round ticket but used one, may be Mat may help you in this.
Welcome to Argentina and good luck! Wink

I'm having a problem buying my airline ticket. One-way tickets are actually much cheaper than round-trip tickets. At least the ones I am finding.

I don't want to deal with this problem. If I have a flight that goes from Nashville to LA to Lima to Buenos Aires, will I still have this problem?

Try www.argentinaspecialist.com... I have booked with them several times and never pay more than $600 for a round trip ticket. Just ask them for a quote and they usually have great prices.

I do not know if you will have problems with the one way... I know they were quite strike 5 years ago... but when I was there in 2003 they did not even check my onward ticket or what I was doing there... and when they do I just would usually say... 'vacaciones'.

I have just come back from BA after 36 hours,
long story but it was good... got caught up in
the 'santa rosa' while everyone was here having
barbecues but it was good all the same.

My view on getting a return ticket is practical twofold.
One a return ticket is not much more expensive than
a one way ticket giving you an option to leave
if things go belly up which is the second reason
that buying a return ticket makes good sense.

I have been to Argentina 3 times now and I would
never go out there to live without giving myself
a way out if things did go arseholes up. Get the return
ticket, you are not a Bolivian or a Paraguayan so the
chances of checking your airline ticket at immigration is pretty small
but Buenos Aires is a big culture shock and the place
is not for everyone. Even if you think you know the place.
So go prepared.
