Okay, I have to say something. I don't mean to be rude. Really, I don't. There's nothing wrong with asking questions, especially when you're a stranger in a strange land, but it seems like you are asking the people of this board to hold your hand and basically live your life in Japan for you whenever life here does not go as seamlessly as it appears you would like it to be.
I don't know what "white can brand" of tuna you're talking about. Maybe nobody on this board knows what you're talking about, especially if you don't even tell us the actual brand name. We don't even know the name of the supermarket! Here's an idea: If you can read or speak a little bit of Japanese, you could ask one of the actual shop workers where it is. Or maybe the shop clerk speaks a little bit of English. Either way, I'm sure that person would better be able to help you than the members of this board. How's that for an idea? Or how about checking out various supermarkets in nearby neighborhoods and comparing their products? Or does that make too much sense?
Does this answer your question? Or do you want to know where you can find a certain flavor of an unknown brand of potato chips too? I'll give you a hint. It's at the corner of those two streets and has a colorful sign with posters in the window.
Get out there and explore, man! Sheesh! Part of living here means taking chances and learning from your own experiences! I can't speak for anyone else, but even though the people on this board can be quite helpful, I'm not so sure they are prepared to field questions almost daily about random stores' inventories, especially when you describe the products you seek so vaguely. |
thanks for that. i appreciate it. also i can add that how do you know i'm not "getting out there and exploring, man". How do you know that I'm not getting out there and exploring more than you. Asking a question on an internet site ain't a crime. The thing (the internet) is here... so I'm gonna ask. I have tried all sorts of different tuna and there seems to be no tuna in water. It's all oil, oil, oil. Now, I don't mind eating oil, oil, oil but there comes a time when I wouldn't mind finding some healthier tuna. If I can ask the question here, fine. I don't mind that you object. Go for your life. But I have no qualms about asking the question. The fact of it all is.. that indeed, I have been to many many supermarkets, and well, it's all 'in oil' as far as I can tell. So that kinda begs the question, don't you think.
as for the stuff about that white can brand... well, yeah, it's that white can brand. I didn't know the exact name of it at the time I was writing the post. I didn't know that was an extremely massive deal. Well, yeah, it's the white can brand. I can't read really that much Japanese at the moment. Is that a crime ... no. How do I feel about that... well, we're not all geniuses. I can in fact speak Chinese, French, a little German, some Arabic and English, so there you go. but, alas, at the moment, basically not much Japanese.
It's not about life not going as seamlessly here as I want, and asking people to hold my hand.....;..! not about that at all. If you think that, well, it's a free country. What questions that I've asked here do you specifically object to.....? Which ones? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 questions?
As for "I don't know what white can brand" you're talking about. Maybe I can say at this point, that the 'white can brand' I'm talking about is essentially THE only tuna brand I've seen in countless supermarkets

apart from all I've just written, you're not meant to know the name of the supermarket. Many many supermarkets... that I've been to. "You could ask one of the shop workers".... uhhhhhh and there is NO tuna in water in all the supermarkets I've been in. "How about checking out various....... or does that make too much sense? roll". That's what I've been doing

"almost daily about random stores' inventories"... well, it was never about that... in any way. And moreover, almost daily?? what other ones apart from tuna |

| Same difference. Even if it doesn't have your favorite brand in the super you might strike it lucky by finding something else you never knew existed and is just as good, even if you cant read the label. Japan is much more fun when you get out of your comfort zone and extend your limits a bit and be a bit adventurous. |
to do with finding some tuna in water? It's interesting.. all this is mighty interesting. I'm not sure what it has to do with attempting to ease off "tuna in oil" and get into some "tuna in water". extending limits, being adventurous?
yes I have eaten mozuku, pigs stomach, snake, chicken feet, goats tongue, raw fish moments ago caught out of the sea, .. and I had no idea what brand all that was

It's not that far back actually. Do a key-word search of the board and I bet 4 times out of five, you'll find a thread dealing with your query on some level at least. If you are really in need of advice and can't find an answer with a wee bit of research, it might be better to start a new thread instead of tagging every new question on to the end of this one. |
thanks. I wonder casually where all the comments about gaijin bars, NFL and expanding horizons are in that thread?
I'm with your comments. I don't necessarily love starting new threads about such stuff... lord knows the comments you'd get for that, considering!!!! And ...as we know, it's not exactly taking up enormous amounts of 'space' to chuck in a question here. ...and what do you know.. I'm not the only one with this 'inane' topic on my mind. Gotta love the internet. Thanks for the link. I do like to search as well by the way, and usually do.. but perhaps I just had 5 minutes at the time of asking this latest tuna question, and as I think back, I believe I thought it better to just add a simple post
----------------
edit: also, it's like, I usually only have a really tiny amount of time on the net. So if I can chuck in a question here.. and that's not like loading a pile of garbage in a room or something (inotherwords, it's not a crime).. and if someone knows the answer, very cool. If it pisses off people, I apologize to you.
Having said that, seriously now... does anyone know about homestays in Japan? I'm interested. I am interested in long term..possibly. And: insurance. Anyone know something about the Post Office insurance, and if I am doing a good thing were I to pick it up and drop my expensive JMA |

Not sure which you mean but the Post Office handles Kampo which is things like life insurance, education insurance for kids and things like pensions and investment accounts.
Last i checked they dont handle health insurance. Maybe it covers the costs of the stay in a private hospital, not the actual costs of treatment and surgery.

Pretty simple solution, learn the kanji for water as shown here --> 水 If you see that in large type on a tuna can chances are it is water based. Barring that, you could learn how to ask in Japanese if said tuna is oil or water based. Japanese are generally pretty accomodating once you start talking to them and will try to get you what you want if you just ask politely. Also, nothing wrong with asking questions but the ones you have asked have been pretty basic and shouldn't have needed to be asked if you attempt to solve the original problem with simple logic. It's a little uncomfortable jumping into a problem with little more than a trial and error approach but it is character building. |

Yes, I know what you mean but your last couple of questions have had nothing specifically to do with Osaka and the heading to this thread is "Questions about Osaka". Have a look again at the replies you've had to your questions and where those posters live. The overwhelming majority of us are in Osaka or Kansai. Especially now that the thread has become so long and the questions more general, I think you would have more luck getting responses from a wider range of people if you started new threads entitled, for example, "Post Office Insurance" or "Homestays".
I don't want to go on and on about it but, yep, you've guessed it- the homestays theme has been covered before:
http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/job/viewtopic.php?t=7803&highlight=homestay
...as has the insurance issue IN YOUR OWN THREAD of August 29th!

The purpose of a forum like this is the exchange of information so I don't think anybody here is purposely discouraging you to ask your questions. But, like, we are all busy people and don't have hours on end to answer the same questions over and over. Come on, now, be honest. Just weigh the time required to enter "tuna" into the search form and scan through a few results against all the posting you and others have done in the last few days on the same topic.
Of course you're committing no crime and I couldn't really care less how and how often you formulate your questions. If I have information I can give, I'll give it. My suggestions were aimed at helping you get more information for the little time you say you have to spend in the forum. It takes a bit more than a repeated question to piss me off. |

thanks I appreciate it., ... and I have 2 seconds now or thereabouts.
The thing about..
]
FIRST I'll say that I wasn't having a go at you at all freddie! in my previous stuff
The thing about going into the "homestay" thread or the insurance thread.. is that basically there's nothin there. The homestay URL doesn't work. It doesn't tell me masses, put it that way. I agree that starting a new thread would be good, as would searching!
The thing about insurance... I mean, I dunno, I have heard the PO insurance is perfectly suited to guys like us. I don't know for sure. I can find out. But I also have wanted to ask here.
The thing about the tuna was that: in many supermarkets, that white brand was ALL they had, and I tried them, and it's all oil, oil, oil. As that VERY thread from that girl before showed, it kind of BEGS the question... the question that I asked. The question was very very very simple. It was always just....: do you guys know where you can find 'tuna in water'. Not much to worry about
...it was never about asking you for a specific type or specific brand of something with a certain color (like the potato chips line) in a certain supermarket. As if! It was always just... hey do youguys know where to find tuna in water. Simple. If not, fine. If youdon't know, fine. No biggie. But I was keen to just ask
cool |

I had that same problem while living in Japan...trying to find tuna in water.
Easiest way to tell is to check the calories printed on the side of the can and compare. Low calories = tuna in water. |

I found Tuna in water by asking the guy at my local grocery store. First I took him to the area where the canned tuna was. Then I said water in Japanese a few times (mizu). He looked the cans over and pointed out a couple of brands that use water and not oil and I went home a very happy customer. Try it! Very easy. I'm sure that most stores carry at least one brand of tuna in water - maybe even your 'white can' brand. Good luck! |
