hi everyone, after researching different southern more rural cities of thailand i have finally decided on going to surat thani. my question is has anyone gone there before that acould offer some advice, such as best way of getting around, best places to stay etc. also if anyone knows if its possible to apply for a hospitality job once i've arrived there (say a hotel or something). my story:good ol' canadian girl, i have a degree in international relations and development and am fluent in french, spanish and cantonese, my studies focused more on tourism and politics and i have tons of experience teaching esl and fsl. i chose surat thani cause i was looking to get away from city life without leaving all of the comforts of home. i was told that there is a good balance here. help, anyone?

Hi there,

I used to live in Surat Thani as it happens and would be delighted to offer any assistance. Drop me a pm.

Cheers

I currently live in Surat Thani. I am not sure exactly what you are looking for but I think you can find better places to live in the south of Thailand. The city itself is quite unattractive and there are no places or real beauty or interest in the immediate surroundings. (i.e. you need to travel for at least an hour to get to a nice beach or place in the hills).

Perhaps proximity to the islands (Koh Samui and Pha-ngan) was influential in your choice. Please remember that if you want to travel there from Surat Thani it takes at least three hours. Also if you want to work in the hospitality business Samui will offer far greater opportunities than Surat Thani.

I concur with Wix. I lived and worked in Surat five years ago and from Wix's description it seems not much has changed.
A positive aspect though is that Paknam does have a pretty nice seafood restaurant.

You don't say if you want a job in the hospitality industry or if you just want to teach people that work in the industry. Anyway Krabi and Phuket would also offer opportunities in both respects.
