You could probably get a couple of weeks of Spanish class under $1500 at Cuernavaca

Is that pesos or dollars? On $1500 dollars, you can get a lot more than a coupe weeks of Spanish class in Cuernavaca.

There are four and eight week programs there, in Guadalajara, and in DF that are no more than $400 and $800 dollars, and some cheaper. UNAM in Mexico City offers a 6 week program, but I don't think it's intensive. Can't remember the price but I don't remember it being particularly high.

Granted, 4 or 8 weeks is not enough to gain fluency, but we're not talking about thousands of dollars here, at least not solely on courses.

Late edit: Here's a link to GLC in Guadalajara. They are at $519 for 4 weeks, so a little higher than I thought. http://www.glc.com.mx/prices.htm

Good link!
Personally, I was making a very rough guess including various other possible expenses (room and board). Plus, I didn't want to make it sound too easy! I'm thinking of going to Playa del Carmen in January myself. I probably won't be taking Spanish classes, but I'm going to try to have extra money in the bank by that time Rolling Eyes And yes, I realize I'll be facing tourists and construction. Maybe I'll get to DF afterwards!

My own experience as a student was very good.
I lived with a family: Grandad+ma, wife+husband, 2 kids, 1 aussie, 1 german, I. Quite a mix. Good English spoken.
3 month spain with 2 meals / day and private accommodation cost you usd 5000. + airfare.
