Paul, let's not forget the drop in currency of the Japanese yen to every major world currency (excluding the US). When I first came here 3 years ago, it was 76 yen to a CDN dollar. This summer I got 96 (even saw it at 104 in Whistler), which is a significant drop in savings.
So to say the pay has not declined in Japan is incorrect. |
Gordon, you are assuming you take your money out of Japan and change into another currency. Foreign currencies fluctuate all the time. When I came here the $US was 200 yen.
I'm talking about what your salary can buy in Japan in Japanese yen. You dont use Canadian dollars in Japan.
I did a quick calculation of cost of living by the way, and you now need 280,000 yen to buy what 250,000 yen bought in 1988. Salaries should have gone up to meet those higher costs, but have in fact gone down instead. |
Paul this is true. I said a drop in savings, but should have said drop in savings "outside of Japan". Can't really see where to invest in Japan if you don't want to be here for the long haul. So if a person't reason to be in Japan is to save money or pay off loans or pay for a graduate degree, maybe they should think again. I know I wouldn't have come if the exchange rate was what it is today. |

Another possiblity gone. The owner decided to interview others (probably in-country) but at least she told me by the date she specified. (Japanese)
Meanwhile I emailed the 2 that left me hanging waiting for interviews. They quickly replied and apologized. One said the positions filled sooner than expected and he didn't have time to reply but I could apply for 06 jobs. Later that day I saw they were advertising for jobs in late fall. Hmm? Big company bs.
Another had written the wrong date down and would still be interested in an interview. Hmm?
There is a possibility closer to home but not sure about it. If I got it could I stay here when I still feel I need to get more Japan time or does fate have something different in store? There's only so much moving around someone can do yet...

Nomadder,
Which part of Japan are you focusing your job search on? |
