Sunaru,
thanks for standing up for me here! The culture shock was mine! I have learnt something about Western "girls" that had hitherto escaped me. |

Geez, I am committed to my kitty, what's wrong with that? I decided he would have to come with me a long time ago because no one will give him the care that I will. I understand you have lived and worked there for a few years. I have been to China a couple of times myself, I know how animals are treated. I just want my kitty to be nice and safe inside my apartment for the next 10 months. You are really killing my spirit here guys...... I have been in contact with a vet in Shanghai and he handles emergency cases. I don't understand what the problem is. If it were you girlfriend you'd find a way to bring her back to the states if you really wanted to. If it were you friend in trouble you wouldn't leave him behind. Maybe you have been in Asia too long. I don't mean to offend, but you surprize me. |

Julia Girl, I've followed the saga of you and your moggie with interest and not without sympathy. However you seem unable to comprehend the level of Chinese bureocracy you are going to come up against. No official will have met this situation before. Their automatic response will be "impossible!". You won't change that, unless you can find their superior who is willing to do so. The chances of that are zero. No one will put their job on the line by saying "your cat is welcome in China", and run the risk of being over ruled.
Maybe I've been here too long too. I sent a bag of tea to a friend who requested it back home. It took half a day, trips to three post offices, and at least a basic level of Chinese language, to find one that thought such a transaction was "possible" - of course, it was all along, but no-one was prepared to take that responsibility. And this is in big, cosmopolitan Shanghai!
Please think again. |

A) I am not going to China to make money, I have money. I am going to learn Chinese and living in the local environment.
B) I have taken many "things" into China, never had a problem before.
C) Why the Bleep are you still talking about my damn cat? Incase you haven't noticed the topic is "WHAT TO I TAKE TO THE EMBASSY", not, "give me your opinion about my cat". I have all my letters etc. I just wanted to know from those more experienced what else they may ask for that isn't on the list of items. Dude, I was just trying to save myself and extra trip.
D) I have been to China before, I have eaten dog and all that good stuff. I UNDERSTAND the general feelings toward pets in this region. My chinese friends don't think it will be an issue, they would be more "in the know" than yourself, a non-cat owner and someone who has no experience importing things into China, like myself.
Why are you being so mean and rude? I though you might be an interesting person before you starting posting on my thread. No longer am I blind! I did not ask for your advice on my cat and I certainly don't need advice from someone without a clue. Have you tried to bring a cat over? I thought not. Freshman my ass.
I tried to be nice to you in my last post. Now I just think your in need of some professional help. oh wait, that would be illegal in China since depression is a mental illness and it ia illegal to be mentally ill (AKA depressed in China) so smile and be happy before someone reports you and you get deported. Maybe you and my cat can share a cell?
What province are you in so that my kitty and I can stay away, far away. No Little Tiger Soup for you!!!!!!!
Sorry for being B.i.tchy for all those not involved, but when a doctor tells you you will never be able to have kids due to a medical issue, you better believe that your pets will become much more valuable to you that something to keep you occupied like that moron who adopted a dog only to treat it badly. Maybe that guy is fitting into his new culture just fine. Blast me if you want, I don't care for the opinions of others. |

grrr.... you say cat people like I'm going to end up an old maid! I am an old maid:!: I'm 26 and have no plans to get married until I can afford a mortgage myself etc (incase said huband decides to lose his job or write a book or something else). So yes by your (chinese) standards, I am an old maid who wants to own her own things and buy her boyfriend presents she DID NOT charge to HIS credit card (and yes, someone in the world actually dates me). Sorry if I am not the kind of "people" you are used to.
My employer understands that because of an accident I can not have children and has happily accepted my kitty after seeing pictures of him and realizing the cat is worth a years worth of my salary. I am sure the fact that my kitty has never had a flea (advantage works well) or having never been outside helps.

I think JG has been quite understanding, although rejecting advice.
I'll bet 5 yuan she has the will and slyness to slip kitty through customs... (Pretend you have an itch under you dress, malformation, you weren't hungry on the plane so you saved lunch...) |

No need my friend. This isn't the first time I have taken something I shouldn't have to a foriegn land, although this is the first time I will have the "influence" to do so. I bet anyone 100 US dollars my cat and I will be safely delivered to the Shangri-la within an hour. Any takers? We arrive on the 17th of August in Shanghai and I am would love to have someone lose the bet and buy me lunch. Yum. |

Wow, JG and Sunny--good flame war! PanamaTeacher and LindaL. could take a few lessons.
Alright, no one's going to eat the cat for two reasons:
1. Cats have SARS. Well, wild civets do anyway.
2. Cats taste sour. Hunan cats do anyway, so they don't eat 'em. Maybe HK or Shanghai cats are tastier. |

Sunaru, for all your negitive energy, I still enjoy reading your posts. Oh and Roger, I totally didn't mean to flame you! No disrespect meant. I am really just dead set on bringing the cat with me. I know it seems silly and stupid to most of you all on here, but hey I have a plan A, B and C. This isn't a decision I have made lightly. I made it a year ago and I'm sticking with it. I admit that I'm nervous about it. But I have taken every measure to insure this goes smoothly. |

JG I think Sunaru has given us a very good reminder when he said:
"You do realize this forum isn't real life, right??
Tis a diversion and nothing more."
In this context I appreciate Sunaru!!!!!!
I too am unable to have children although not because of any accident. I sufferd unnatural physical acts that damaged me and almost cost me my life. I empathize with you and what others may see as a chip on your shoulder, I understand a little.
Have the adventure of your life!!!!
And civits were cleared of any culpability in the SARS matter according to the ChinaDaily. |
