The wise King Solomon writing in Lamentations claimed "Vanity, Vanity, all is vanity." The vanity of some who post in this forum is so obvious that they need not be mentioned by name.

Jesus preached humility. The humility of some posters is likewise obvious.

The question remains, which will get you farther in this life, vanity or humility.

What exactly do you mean by "get you further?" Success in your career? Monetary gain? Inner peace?

Lucy you have stated the implicit thought process which underlies the primary question. Your question requires each person to evaluate what the meaning of life is for them before they can then answer the primary question.

Do you think this poll is too advanced for the audiance? NOT!!! Laughing

"Infamy, Infamy. They've all got it in for me..." uttered Kenneth Williams in 'Carry On Cleo', as he predicted where this thread was about to go...

İnteresting question Linda ,however are those two things enough? One could be thought of as a negative character trait the other isn't . Therfore depending on which one you thought was the positive of the two would this tell more about yourself than simply saying humility is the right path knowing full well you are gonna get dumped on by the first vain sob that comes along . Personally I think a balance of bothis not a bad thing some humble people have no sense of occassion .

Then essentially this poll is meaningless.

I'd say in the Western world vanity, greed, obsession, lack of moral code will get you further in terms of material weath. However, you'll be very spiritually poor.

Which of these paths will make you happier: living the great life, having damaged almost all you your personal relationships, but with a BIG house, several cars and a entertainment system to die for? Or living a modest life with friends and family you love and trust, and who love and trust you in return?

I'm not sure why the path has to be either-or. Personally, I see nothing wrong with wanting to be wealthy and happy, or are you suggesting that's an impossible combination? Could I choose the path marked Wealthy, Happy, and Humble, or isn't that an option?

Tim,

I agree with you, a balance is possible. However, getting back to the question: do you think you'll get further in life by being humble? I don't. Why? Because business demands that you not be humble, that we crow about our talents as loud as possible, that we exaggerate our skills and experiences, and even lie on our resumes to get a job or promotion. Business tends to be about telling people what they want to hear and worrying about the truth afterwards.

Vanity may win you some of the superficial "good" things in life. But humility (or hard work) will likely get you much further. @ least as far as worthwhile goals are concerned.

Iain, I was afraid you'd say something like that. I'm not sure if it's universal, but that definitely seems to be how things function -- not only business but most other things as well -- here in this little corner of Mexico.

So, where does that leave those people whose ethics won't allow them to play the game in that way?

It would be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a person to be humbly vain or vainly humble.

That's a huge question; it depends on the individual. Lots of people are reasonably satisfied with their lot in life. But are they trying to get ahead? I don't think so. For those who do want to get ahead, having great ambition and morals is an interesting conundrum. It is possible to achieve you career goals without treading on anyones toes, or stabbing your colleagues in the back. But wouldn't it be so much easier not to worry about anyone and just think about number one?
