I've been looking around on the net for a good map of the train lines in this area in english. Can anyone help me out with this so I can get a better idea of the places you're talking about?
EDIT:

Relax man it isn't that bad, quite convenient actually. I lived in Hashimoto for 4 years and it was cheap as dirt and accessible to Yokohama and Shinjuku.35 mins to SHinjuku on Keio and 38 to Yokohama. Costco is one stop away at Tamasakai or a 5 minute drive. Machida is 12 minutes away on Yokohama with a thriving foreign/local nightlife. The area around Sagamihara station is pretty boring but Hashimoto is decent and growing rapidly. I had a sweet 2ldk apartment for 60000 yen a month. THe Yokohoma line is just as reliable as the Odakyu and less crowded and I rode BOTH of them everyday for 3 years so don't listen to all that negative crap. For the price and convenience it's one of the best places to live for Tokyo suburbs. In fact, I had my choice of places to live and chose Hashimoto so and try and get that there as opposed to Sagamihara-eki area. I can answer any questions you might have about the area. This board tends to be fairly negative so PM me if you want.
Cheers,
Chix
P.S You're going to have a ball, don't worry about it. |
Hey Chix,
You're right when you say Hashimoto is accessible to Shinjuku and Yokohama.
But the JR Sagami line is, in my opinion, the worst train line in the Tokyo area. The JR Yokohama line isn't too far behind.
Comparing it to Odakyu is not even fair...how many rapid trains does the JR Yokohama line have compared with Odakyu? Far fewer. It's also more expensive, and slower. This is a fact, not opinion.
Machida and thriving nightlife? ha ha ha...I suppose, if you compare it with villages down in Shikoku, it is exciting. But it pales in comparison to Shibuya, Roppongi, Shinjuku, etc.
Whilst I agree with you that this message board is negative, I'm not being negative, I'm just telling TLL my opinions about the area. If I wanted to live in Tokyo suburbs I personally wouldn't live anywhere near the JR Yokohama or Sagami lines.
But that's just me.
That being said, he/she could do a lot worse than Sagamihara/Hashimoto, that's for sure. |

well that map has JR but it doesn`t have the private lines.
Sagamihara is pretty spread out. It includes the Yokohama line and Sagami Lines. The Odakyu Line has a station at Machida. Once you cross the river, you are in Kanagawa. Sagami-Ono is an express stop then there are Odakyu-Sagamihara (US military family housing is nearby) and Soubudaimae (where Camp Zama is). Soubudai borders Sagamihara and Zama.
On the Yokohama Line, Machida is in Tokyo, but once you go north, that is Kanagawa Ken. Kobuchi, Fuchinobe, Yabe, Sagamihara, and Hashimoto are in Sagamihara.
Sagamihara and Hashimoto are both express stops, and Hashimoto is big since it has the Keio line as well.
Near Yabe station is the supply depot for the US army.
Machida is busy since you can get to Yokohama and Shinjuku directly.
Lots of people transfer there.
On the Sagami Line, several stops are in Sagamihara, until you get to Iriya, which is in Zama City.
The Sagami Line is less developed by far.
At least part of the Sagami Line runs on one track, which is why it is one of the slowest trains around.

I like the book called the Tokyo Transit Book. It is published by the Japan Times. You can find it in Tokyo, but I don`t know if you can buy it in Nagoya.
It is a thin little book, and a bargain at 950 yen. I bought it at Kinokuniya in Shinjuku. |

| just wanted to write a quick note for this thread to say that i have successfully moved to Sagamihara and its definately not as bad as many people were saying here. 40 mins to Tokyo, COSTCO and lots of shopping and places near by, and lots of places to go out. so far so good for me anyway. i will let you know if it changes. thanks again. |
