Just finished talking to a friend in Taipei, who found out he has to leave Taiwan ASAP. He came over to Taiwan through IACC last winter and was teaching at a private highschool in Taipei. He told me he started noticing pay discrepencies a few months ago, but got nowhere, when he asked questions about them. Ended up losing all his hours soon after. Today when he went down to the FA police in Taipei, with some questions, he found out that the ARC, that IACC issued him, didn't even allow him to teach legally. It turns out it was sponsored, by all things, an architectural office located in Taichung(where IACC has their offices)?!!? Not his school, not IACC, but an architectural office. Just another reason to never deal with an agent.

IACC is notorious for getting jobs for criminal types as teachers on Taiwan.
They operate out of Taichung which is the organized crime capital of Taiwan and possibly East Asia allowing them to totally disregard the law in exchange for bribes and quanxi.
There is no such thing as a good job placement agent on Taiwan!
Good luck!
A.

Considering all of the bad press about IACC out there I am really surprised that anyone actually deals with them anymore. Surely any teacher looking at coming to Taiwan to teach should be responsible enough to research the schools or recruiters that they are dealing with. Type 'IACC Taiwan' or 'International Avenue Recruitment Agency' into any search engine and you will see what I mean. It would seem to me that anyone who actually accepts a placement through IACC these days probably doesn't deserve much sympathyfrom us as they certainly don't appear to have done much to protect themselves.

Try an agency like Dewey, or Reach to Teach, or check out the lists at www.buxiban.com to see what is being said about recruiters. There are some good ones out there, but there are some bad ones too so research is the key to avoiding trouble.
