OK another poster asked if there was a thread for good schools to work for. Seeing none I thought I'd start one.
Luliang Higher College is certainly one of these. This college is nestled in the small city (250000 people) of Lishi. It is the capital of Luliang Prefecture about 4 hours drive from the provincial capital, Taiyuan. It will be two hours or less distant in one month when they open the new expressway.
It is a teachers school and the majority of its English students are training to be either English Teachers or Translators.
I got my appartment. It's huge. I have been told that an equivalent appartment in Toronto would be around $1200-1500 per month.
There is a one month vacation at half pay; normal pay is 5000 RMB per month. Heat, gas and tap water are paid for. The telephone and the purified water tower must be maintained by the teacher.
The staff are friendly, the students are helpful and the locals are honest. The school hasn't broken any promises and it has basically just left me alone to do my thing without interference. I like that.
All in all it is a good school to work for. |

Dalian Institute of Light Industry. SUPERB apartment and the university is not stingy about money either. A Davester is currently teaching there and he said it was the nicest apartment he's seen after having spent 3 years in China. Honest FAO, free scheduled shuttle bus to and from Carrefour every day, and a stone's throw away from the airport. Depending on who you teach, you could be getting some very good students (English majors), or lazy bums (students taking Oral English as an extra curriculum course). The assistant dean (if it's still the same person) is a clueless b*tch and I was told that the dean of the Foreign Language department doesn't give a rat's a$$ about improving the students' oral English at all. Your job is to provide high grades to make the university looks good so it can finally get approved by the education bureau to become a full-status university. In fact, don't be surprised if you are told to CHANGE the grades of any English major who fails (I once "upgraded" someone's grade from 30-something % to 60%). |
