Hello
I will be arriving in Ankara in mid October. I would like to score a teaching job in Ankara to tide me over to around April. Are there many positions or opportunities actually going around October in Ankara? I have a degree and two years experience teaching English to immigrants, but no TESL thing. I'm just after covering my living expenses.

Ankara has dozens of teaching opportunities, especially around the Kizilay area and also, to a lesser extent - the Ulus area.

Walk around Kizilay with copies of your resume. Wear a good shirt and slacks, and look for the language schools, like 'Kent English' and others in the area. Walk in, and present yourself. Your chances of landing a job are high if you are presentable.

Ankara has a huge demand for English for several reasons.

1. Huge University population with many Unis. in the area.

2. Business sector workers who wish to learn English.

3. Emphasis in the Turkish Education system of pushing English as a Foreign Language, especially with the prospect of joining the Euro. Union, some years down the road.

When ghost studied Turkish at Tomer Kizilay it noticed dozens of English Language Institutes around the school, and you can do the same.

The advantages of Ankara over Istanbul are numerous.

There are less foreigners attracted to Ankara, because it is not as vibrant and exciting as Istanbul.

Ankara is cheaper than Istanbul, and rents are cheaper too. Ghost elected domicile in the Yukar Ayranci area, a short 10 minutes dolmus ride from the centre of Kizilay.

For the above reasons, and others, Ankara has many advantages over other locales in Turkey, and obtaining work there should not be a problem.

Ghost in Taichung, Taiwan.
