| I am graduating in the spring with a BA in Communication. I would like to teach abroad, in either Japan, Spain or Italy. I have been searching online for programs that will certify me in TESOL or TEFL and place me with a job abroad but there are sooo many. It's hard to figure out which ones are legitimate, so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of a good program??? I am in Chicago, but could take one online as well. THanks! |

I am working in Japan, you dont need anything more than a university degree for your work visa. Most of the big chain schools that hire teachers here will train you in their methods and use of their materials. Doing an online course and then going to work for them will simply confuse you.
Generally speaking schools here interview and hire their own teachers and dont go through third-party recruitment agencies. You want a job in Japan? you interview with NOVA or GEOS in Chicago and get your sponsorship through them. You come over with a visa and you dont need to go through a school that will line you up a job.
If you want my personal and professional opinion (which is about as good as you are going to get on here) I would not waste my time with one week online courses where there is no practicum or observed teaching. If you are serious about getting some qualifications that are recognised here (not that you really need them) is do a CELTA course or equivalent of at least 100 hours plus practicum. Dont wast your time with these 40-hour or 60-hour courses, You cant learn how to teach in that time and they are not recognised here. |

Do you have an EU member country passport? If not, then Japan is the place for you (out of your list).
Do you think you want to teach abroad for a career, or for a couple of years?

It is exactly for this reason that I always recommend doing one through a university, not through a private company. OTOH, a university course is going to take longer, probably be much harder, and more expensive. Maybe the best thing you could do now is to check the linguistics department of your university to see if they have a programme, or can direct you to one.
The previous poster was referring to eikaiwa (English conversation) schools. |

Get your Celta and find your own job.
Joining an agency that offers to train you (online or in one week) and set you up in job is just laying yourself open to be ripped off twice; once for a certificate recognised by no-one but the training agancy themself and once more for finding you a job that you could have found for yourself, at better money as your employers would not have had to pay the agency fee. |
