Take a look at the list on the right of the threads and check out how many people are viewing these postings. Then compare it with the number of replies. WOW! There are a lot of mystery beings roaming this sight without announcing themselves. C'mon people, don't be shy...why y ou here? Dreaming about going and not quite brave enough, or too poor yet? Tell us who you are, let's get this fiesta started. |

There certainly are a number of lurkers. If you look at the main forum page, at the bottom, it tells you who is online. It is almost always something to the tune of 10 registered, 1 mod, 50 guests.
That view number on the right can be tricky. If Luna Chica makes a post, then the, what, 10(?) regs in this forum go and see. That's 10 views. Then Guy responds, so we all get an email and we go look. 2 posts, 20 views. Then Aramas is next with something from left-of-centre, and we have 30.
And that is how the forum works... Test on Friday. |

And then PT comes along and hijacks the thread and so a bunch of people end up writing ridiculous things... and everyone has to keep coming back to check if Justin's posted a photo yet...
There's a test TOMORROW!?! No fair, I didn't get a chance to study! I don't perform well in tests! Is it graded or pass/fail?
*PT slowly dissolves into a puddle of pre-exam stress* ACK!

I have been lurking lately. I just switched jobs, and I am enrolled at Shenandoah U.'s distance TESOL program but put it off for a semester due to changing jobs, moving, etc. I am still a Spanish teacher but lately have felt like I need a break from teaching...and it's only October.
Also, I miss Moonraven...she was interesting and I liked reading the train wrecks. |

And there are those of us (or is it just me?!?!?) who read everything 19 times before posting a reply. Dim-witted, perhaps?

Hi , I confess that I am a lurker
I'm just cruising the boards as I'm still in Asia getting the funds together to head to L.A.
When I get closer to arriving I will fire up the posting! |

I come here often, but seldom post as you can tell from the number off to the left. I only chime in when I have something helpful or useful to say. Its not that I dont find most of the talk here interesting, I do, but when I have nothing to say-I have nothing to say. Most of the times that I have useful information for someone I respond with a PM, as a few of you already know.
When I think I have something to say, youll hear from me. |

Nice to meet some of you folk. I am moving to Peru in March and I am one of these anally retentive people who like to thoroughly research things (must be the journalism university degree) so I log on to this forum about twice a day and get very sad when there isn't much action happening. |

On the other hand, there are annoying newbies who ask for advice without picking up a book, or searching the internet.
I would rather people find a book, even a very out-of-date book will provide some basic information that would give someone a basis for intelligent questions. Maybe a local library?
I can imagine reasons for people scanning without posting, but sometimes ignorance is bliss. I'd rather imagine they're all waiting to say something informed or useful before posting. |

I hope you are not referring to myself there. I have scoured the net and my local library (which has a total of about 6 books on Peru) for information. I simply like to fraternise with like-minded people. Sorry if I am not high-brow enough for you. |

Some people, and I have heard this first-hand, make one or two posts that never get a response. So they lurk. Others make a post and get shot down and never come back. Then there's Paulie. Nothing seemed to keep him away. |

You're so sensitive! No, I don't mean you, Luna!
I just meant to provide a counter-example of people who don't lurk but should!!! I lurked on the JobDiscussionForum a while myself before finally posting.
I think that its a good thing people lurk instead of posting prematurely- There's also marketeers here selling stuff, or finding marks, er, customers. There are honorable and not-so-honorable recruiters scouring these boards, who may be keeping up with news, what teachers are looking for, etc. Many people who for various reasons won't want to advertise their presence. Also daydreamers, bored office workers, and people who aren't ready to take the plunge. |
