Thanks to everyone who responded to my last post regarding an adult conversation class. I have started my class and I did start picking some articles from the China Post/Taipei Times and I bought one conversation book from Caves. The adults want to do a lot of role-playing where I create a scenario and they have to decide what to say and do in English (going to the movies, going out to eat at a restaurant in the States, etc). They enjoy this quite a bit!
I have been asked to tutor a 2nd grader for a three hour lesson once a week. Does anyone have any good games that work well for an individual. I have used a multitude of games for both large classes (over 45 students) and small classes (6-8 students), but I am having a bit of a problem coming up with something exciting for just one student.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance! |

The first thing I would ask them to do is split that 3 hours into two one and a half hour sessions. 3 hours is a hellishly long time for a seven year old to sit still. |

I completely agree with markholmes' opinion. 1.5 hours at a time is plenty for a kid that young.
Let us know a bit more about his level. How long has he studied English? Beyond the most basic questions (How are you? Can you swim?...) what is his listening comprehension level?
Dice, color markers, workbooks, artificial fruit, his toys, etc. should certainly be part of future lessons.
Best wishes,
Taylor

I think most of will agree that 3 hours is a long time for one 8 yr. old.
You could try a role-play. He/she will probably have some action figures or dolls you can use. Just start with any situation that insterests the student.
Cooking, you don't really cooking. I made a fruit salad with one of my students and it went very well. You get to talk about different fruit, color, shape, taste ...
Memory game. Use flash cards. For lower level they can be pictures for higher level they can have words. |

I am tutoring a 2nd grader for 3 hours. I spoke to the parents to see if I can break it up into at least 2 lessons. They told me that their son's schedule is too busy and that he only has 1 day after school that he is available for a private lesson.
He is even busy on the weekends. He goes to Kojen for 4 hours on Saturday morning followed by a 4 hour math class.
On Sunday he has piano lessons and chess lessons. Homework is done in the evenings.
My question is this: When does a Taiwanese child get to be a child? |
