| I refused to look at any salary less than 5000 RMB. I got that plus a 6000 RMB completion bonus, 1000 RMB health coverage and a free bicycle. |

nothing wrong with coming to china to make money in esl, but if i'm an esl teacher i will go elsewhere to rake in money thanks. there are well paying jobs here in china, yes. but they are few and far between. te vast majority are in the RMB4000-RMB6000 range. hardly well paying by the standards of other countries (japan, korea, taiwan, two of which i worked in also).
what interests me on this board are the esl teachers that find extremely well paying jobs yet are afraid to say where they work. perhaps the possibility of future competition scares them? perhaps they dont really have what they say they have. further, some of them (highly paid esl teachers) think they're indispensable. put your hand in a bucket of water.... then take it out..... you'll be replaced as quickly and as easily as that space where your hand used to be.
people come here for different reasons. i make RMB4500 per month. but i have another RMBXXXX from elsewhere that requires no effort on my part. i'm happy with less money from my job. as long as other conditions are met.... |

Speaking just to those who have a serious bent, would like to earn more as TEFLers, and have a few years to invest in a given locale, here's what I've found works for me over the last thirteen years of living and working abroad.
Be reliable, perform well over time, and your reputation will grow. Good opportunities to earn more will then begin to find you. Try to develop the reputation, "expensive, but good". Keep in mind that your skills and time are all you have to sell, so try to organize your work so as to minimize travel time. When discussing pay, bear in mind that you'll probably not be offered more than you say you require, so give some serious thought to what you'd like to be averaging/hour for your work.
My employer and sponsor in China, the China branch of an American company, has me teach their employees. With their permission, two other American companies have contracted for my services, as well. I teach a total of 17 hours a week, and travel a total of three hours a week in carrying out these assignments. I have a total of about sixty students, organized by level into eight groups.
I'm comfortable working in this way, and it gives me some flexibility regarding time off, as well. Others approach getting the work they want using a different model, one that works for them. It's just that this one has worked for me, here.
An entry level job in China, such as several posters have mentioned, gets your foot in the door in the country. Do a good job at it, and other opportunities will present themselves, over time. |

| Good on ya Mandu spill the beans lets let everyone know that you can make money here. Certain people in China are making a fortune out of education headmasters, government officials, businessmen/women - the sorry old story, that the cost of living is low, isnt an excuse for not getting a decent share. |
Lol, kind of reminds me of an argument with an old girlfriend of mine about the 4 dollars a day/week? her Dad paid the Indians in Guatemala to peel shrimp. She said that if they paid them say double that they would only work half the year.
