I heard tell that the government is going to start doing serious background checks on degrees.
I had heard this rumor before. Does anyone know if it is true? Or is it just an urban myth?

I don't have any information that would support or deny it, but I personally wouldn't be surprised if it were true.

In light of the reinstitution of the teacher blacklists, the requirement of teachers to show proof of payment of last years taxes prior to their ARC's being renewed, and reports of teachers caught working illegally being deported even months after the fact, it does seem clear that the government is trying to tidy up the industry. This is certainly a good thing as it is cutting away all the dead wood.

There are plenty of qualified teachers who are willing to accept legal positions these days and I don't really see a place myself for the fringe dwelling illegals.

It is yet another reason why we should all ensure that we are working legally and keeping our noses clean.

There are new sections of the police depts. that call and interview foreigners about their colleges, course work, college towns etc. once they apply for ARC's. I know people who got these calls and I knew people to get arrested after them. 19 year olds with fake BA's caused this.

In the south, they are desperate, in Taipei or Taipei county, it is an arrestable /deportable offense to put in a fake diploma and you WILL be caught gauranteed. I know people that were grilled by special depts. maybe of the FAP about the courses they took etc. and their hostelmates got in arrested for fraud for fake hong kong degrees. No clue hat happened after that.

Nothing to worry about if you are legitimate. If not, boo freakin' hoo. The sooner they throw the sorry frauds out the better.

i am kinda mixed on this one. i know some great people that do not have "real" degrees and I feel sorry for them if they get deported.

However, if they gov is really cracking down, it will weed out alot of folks and perhaps drive up the demand and salary for those of us with legit degrees.

But I originally posted this because I want to know if this is offical or just an urban legend

apart from 18 & 19yr olds having degrees, how else does the Man check up on whether your degree is fake.

A guy I worked with in Taichung got his agency to supply a degree. He has never laid his eye's on it but got his ARC no probs.

The CLA generally just receive a copy of your certification from the school as it is seen as the schools responsibility to verify the authenticity of your documentation. So the first way for the government to determine the validity of your documents would be to ask to see your originals. This happens from time to time.

Aside from that they could contact your institution to determine whether someone by your name had ever been enrolled at that school - I assume.
