Hi all,
If a teacher were to have a good idea for an ELT resource book, and were fairly sure that such a thing had not already been introduced into the market, what exactly would be the path between "having a good idea" and "having a book published"?
Would said teacher contact a publishing company and say "Look at this idea I have, what do you think?" Would they develop a "prototype" first? Or, perhaps, would they simply forget it, as if your names not "Swan" or "Thornbury" you stand no chance?
All just out of interest, of course
Thanks in advance for any replies

Jyulee,
I only had one small textbook published many years ago but i know many people who publish texts through some of the foreign publishers in Japan, some have written half a dozen or more.
My guess is you would need to have a working draft in place with several complete chapters or at least in the finishing stages. You would send in a couple of completed chapters to the publisher and then they would road-test it among practicing teachers to see what kind of response it would get, It would also have to fit it with what they think would sell in large quantities, not just what you think is a good idea. They would then come back to you with ideas to make it more presentable or appealing , or tell you to scrap the whole idea.
A lot depends also on your niche and target market and whether there is a demand for such a text. |

You could also try turning it into an e-book and forgoing the publishers altogether, if you can be savvy about putting it online and marketing it. Think Amazon. |
