Just wondering if anyone has experience living in Moneterrey. Is it the Americanized, snotty, industrialized city that I think it is? |

when you say "Americanized" are you referring only to the US or the whole of North America ( that includes Canada)......... I know you Canadians are very proud of your country and usually do not besmirch it's reputation....
you are making me feel very defensive about the great country that I am from..........yes, we only comprise 8% of the world population....and yes, we consume over 60% of the worlds resources.......... but at least we are good at what we do..........yes?????????????
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm |

Can't argue with that.
Monterrey has more of an American influence that central or southern cities, yes. mostly for its proximity to the border and for being an industrial and economic hub to the US.
I've met a good number of norteos and wouldn't say they are snotty at all, at least not in the sense I believe you mean. |

Ahhh! Guy, your changing avatar is scaring me!
I've heard it said that a symptom of US arrogance is our propensity to refer to ouselves as Americans, as though the rest of the inhabitants in the Americas didn't count! Of course United Staters or U.S.ers is rather awkward, while "Canadian" and "Mexican" trip off the tongue much more easily. Maybe the question should be how much Monterey is "gringoized?" |

This is mostly a language issue. It's hard to say USAians, so American is easy. We all say this in Canada. Here, the right term is Estad Unidense, though many people also say Americano. America refers to the whole of the Americas, but I don't think anyone save for the most nationalist Mexican really cares. Gringo is much easier to use.
When you write it out, the abreviation for USA is EE UU. Why, I have no idea. The Eropean union is UE. Mexico's full official name is Los Estados Unidos de Mexico (The United States of Mexico). |

Who is the deepest font of information....
Los Estados Unidos is EE.UU. because plural things are doubled in their abriviations. I found EE.UU. more common in South America, here I see EUA or simply USA more often than EE. UU.
SorryTaurus, Ive never lived in Monterrey. I visited briefly two years ago, and was plesently surprised, but I only spent 3 days there and most of it was in the convention center. Downtown was nice and has some pedestrian streets. And certainly you wouldn't get as excited over finding seasame oil as I do where I live . |

If I may digress once more.......
I was raised in a family that I had one parent that immigrated from Greece and the other was from US. Growing up, anyone that was not Greek was lumped in the American category. ( Anyone who has watched Big Fat Greek Wedding can begin to understand that the Greek people are very proud of their heritage and wear it prominently on their sleeve......basically you are Greek or other....lol)
I made the mistake of when I came to Mexico calling the US....america. It semantically is totally not correct and another poster mentioned that is is a very centric term. It was offensive to the people I was speaking to and I will never refer to US as America again....
My first post was totally tounge in cheek....i was not upset at Taurus.
US is a totally greedy nation compared to others....there are many many great things about it too. My father was a person that you hear about in the movies.....came to the US with a few dollars and had a life filled with plenty from hard work and commitment......
Now I am getting to mushy.....I will stop.
Tauras.......I think a general rule of thumb is that the closer you are the the US border, the more like the US the city will be. I am in a town about 3 hours South of Tucson ( pronounced TOOK-SON by the mexican folk) and this city has many many American influences, but at the same time reflects much of the traditional culture.
If you want a traditional Mex-perience....do not go to MOnterrey....go somewhere in the South, go somewhere that gringos do not go to vacation. |

Ok. Well, what I ment to say was will I still feel like I am in North America and yes I know that Mexico is part of North America too, but let's face it, typically most cities in Canada and the U.S are not so different in terms of cultures and structures and food for that matter as say compared to Oaxaca or even Guadalajara. My whole desire to travel is to find and experience differences. Hence the question. Is Monterrey too similar to the U.S ( wont say America, even though Americans themselves refer to themselves as such) |

It's pretty difficult to answer your question really. You might perceive things differently than others would. All I can definitely say is that southern cities are very different from Monterrey.
Monterrey would probably have more of a Texas feel to it than anything else, Even American cities vary. |
