Actually, it is a private school - not Govt, and I went through John Dewey Consulting which is meant to be well respected...

I have a lot of respect for the company John Dewey myself and I have recommended them in the past on a number of occasions. I have done so as I am aware of how many teachers they have placed over the years and the lack of problems. I have also found them to be very forthcoming with information and professional in their actions. I am surprised to hear that they are the recruiter in question. The good news is that John Dewey is a licenced recruitment company so if it turns out that you are actually working illegally, then at least action will be able to be taken against the recruiter for putting you in this position.

I am also surprised that it is a private not a government school, but there is good news on that front too. There is some scope for private mainstream schools to actually employ foreign teachers and therefore some of what I said in my posts above needs to be more carefully considered. You may in fact be in a position that could be legal, but you are most certainly not legal at present and it is unfair of the recruiter and the school to place you in this position.

The general advice remains though:

1. You have been asked to wait far too long for the appropriate documentation. The work permit, resident visa, and ARC process should be complete within about a month.

2. Your passport is an important document. You need to know where it is and either get it back from that person, or obtain the receipt for collection of that document.

3. As the position seems quite unsuitable you would be well advised to find an alternative.

Changes in what I have said previously would include advice to actually contact Dewey first with your concerns. Speak with Andrew and mention that you have been speaking with Brian about some concerns you have with the school. I believe that they will assist you, but if you don't feel comfortable doing this then feel free to jump over to the CLA. It is always best to contact the CLA by phone.

Please also keep us all updated here as this is an important case. I will most certainly review my comments about John Dewey if it turns out that they have in fact placed you in an illegal position and are attempting to offer you a work permit through another company.

I realise I did half of the things suggested NOT to do in the 10 Steps to Success in Taiwan http://www.geocities.com/taiwanteacher2002/Success.html

Don't feel too bad about that. In order to get legal work in Taiwan you pretty much need to break Aristotles rules anyway.
