A puzzle to ponder; some of you will probably know the answer already so don't spoil it for the rest of the class.
A DOS calls a teacher into his office and says "There has been complaints about your teaching. Students have complained that you come in totally unprepared and knowing nothing about the subject. So sometime next week, you are going to have a surprise observation. Because you don't know what day you'll be observed next week, you will have to prepare every lesson properly."
The teacher leaves the DOS's office in a happy mood. He knows that it is impossible for him to have such a suprise observation. Why?
Solution monday. |

Because it's a small school, and the DOS still teaches quite a bit? So the teacher knows he or she can only be observed when the DOS is free, which is never?

PS- This is how it would be where I work... |

A DOS calls a teacher into his office and says "There has been complaints about your teaching. Students have complained that you come in totally unprepared and knowing nothing about the subject. The teacher leaves the DOS's office in a happy mood. He knows that it is impossible for him to have such a suprise observation. Why? |
Here goes.
If the teacher hasn't been inspected on any day from Mon-Thu, he knows for certain the observation will be on Friday. Therefore, it will no longer be a surprise, so the DOS cannot make the observation on Friday and still have it be a surprise. The final day of the week the DOS can perform the observation is therefore Thursday.
However if the last day the DOS can perform the observation and still have it as a surprise is Thursday, by the time it gets to Wednesday, the teacher knows that the observation will be on Thursday, therefore it will no longer be a surprise. So the final day of the week that the DOS can perform the observation is therefore Wednesday.
However if the last day the DOS can perform the observation and still have it as a surprise is Wednesday, by the time it gets to Tuesday, the teacher knows that the observation will be on Wednesday, therefore it will no longer be a surprise. So the final day of the week that the DOS can perform the observation is therefore Tuesday.
And by continuing this, we can see that it is logically impossible for the teacher to have a surprise observation.
Okay, where's my jacket? |

Uh huh.
I think the teacher's sleeping with the school owner, and so knows that the DOS is getting canned on Monday. |

If this scenario were to take place in a language school in Mexico, the best way for the DOS to do a surprise observation would be to tell the teacher, "I'll be observing your 9:00 a.m. class on Wednesday," and then show up at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday to do the observation. That someone in this country would actually do what he said he was going to do, and also do it when he said he was going to do it . . . that would certainly surprise the heck out of me! |
