Greethings,
I've recently accepted a position as a conversational English instructor with Nova, and will be leaving for Japan in September. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions regarding international medical insurance. Thus far, all I've been able to find is emergency insurance and was hoping to get something more comprehensive. Also, it seems all of the companies I saw (excepting STA) ask that they be contacted before one is admitted to a hospital, or else coverage is reduced by at least 50%! So if you please, your combined input could prove invaluable. Thanks. |

I know that many companies offer 'dollar a day' insurance, or extended medical insurance for travel, but the catch is that you need a basic medical plan in your own country valid for the time. Also, you need to contact the insurance company at the time of the hospital visit to get the full coverage, some will even wire the money. Thomas Cook is quite good for this.
If you don't have a medical plan in your home country, then you need expat insurance which is a little more expensive. Anyone well-versed in this who can recommend good companies? Along this line, I'll be working in a high school in China this Sept. If the high school offers their own health insurance package, does anyone know if I can take out extended medical (see above), using the school's plan as the 'base', instead of my home country?

I guess it would be nice if Nova paid for medical insurance, but all they really do is recommend their JMA insurance plan, which is woefully inadaquate by my estimate. |

When I lived in Prague I used a company called International Medical Group. They were relatively cheap and reimbursed you as long as you provided a certified receipt. You might look into them. |
