I just read in another post, from the canadian in korea asking about work in vietnam, that it was possible to get a six month temporary visa to get you started untill you actually get your background check together. So just to confirm, schools can and do hire people before the background check is submitted? |

Yes, it is possible to get a six month temporary visa to get you started untill you actually get your background check together. But this is only if the school coughs up the money to the immigration dept and most schools are trying to avoid it.
Just to confirm: Yes, schools can and do hire people before the background check is submitted. Actually this is the real norm and some schools who get raided by the govt offices are paying them off to let the teachers stay as they need them desperately. I have yet to hear of teacher taking the brunt from the proper authorities yet. The bad schools on the other hand have been trying to recoup their losses from teachers salaries. |

Thanks. I emailed the us embassy in Bangkok were I am now and they said they couldn't help either. I guess the best thing for me, as an american, is to send my fingerprints to the FBI in washington with an 18 dollar check or money order. Or does anyone know a better way?javascript:emoticon(' ')

Schools in Viet Nam need teachers desperately?? Sounds very curious. Surely you must be joking.
But, it's a good thing that the gov't is raiding those evil, bad, terrible, bad, horrible, gosh darn evil-doers. Everyone knows language schools are safehouses for all sorts of criminals and those that teach there are the dregs of society.

The key word here is 'yet'. |

lol, I am not joking when I say that a USD, or in this case a lot of VND, goes a long way. I myself don't subscribe to doing business that way, but have been witness in a few instances. It is just the way businesses here do business. It's so common place that many just consider it how business is done. There has been an Anti-Corruption law debated and passed in the last few months by the Gov't and they are starting to take steps to weed out businesses that are stealing from the national treasury. This has resulted in some positive results and some schools are holding on to their qualified teachers by treating them much better and avoid paying this 'additional fee' by not filling it's staff with backpackers. |
