I am hoping someone has enough free time to help me with this query I have. I am an experienced ESL/EFL/ELICOS teacher with a 4 year English degree, a Post-Graduate Dip.Ed in English and History and a CELTA. I have almost two years experience of TEFL in South Korea, and two years teaching English to international students in Australian highschools and Curtin University's ELICOS programme for overseas students including teaching English for Specific Purposes to Nursing students from Japanese universities.I want to work in NYC in a similar environment. I was hoping someone reading this could point me in the right direction as far as sponsorship/green cards go. I am a permanent Australian resident carrying an Irish passport and I have most of my mother's family living in NYC. Any information would be of much help. Thank you, Angela Donovan

I think you're going to have a difficult time getting work here, as positions like the ones you described could easily be filled by anyone currently living in NYC. Maybe your best bet is to come here on a tourist visa and go talk to some people, then see what they can do about hiring you on as an instructor. From what I know of public schools, your chances of working in one are slim to none, thanks to the No Child Left Behind Act. Of course, there are always exceptions. However, it may be possible to land a university job. You may also run into the problem of ESL programs teaching standard American English, with your background in Australian/British English(??)

This website will give you a place to start, but be prepared to spend a lot of time going over the info!

Thank you for taking the time to reply and I really appreciate the information you supplied. My background is in both American and British English [ Australian English is an oxymoron ] but mostly American since I taught in South Korea and taught American English there. Thanks for the help.

You could always check out the New York City Teaching Fellows program. Unfortunately, I don't have a website, but I know they recruit pretty heavily.

Also, I had a friend who taught in the public schools under an H1-B visa. You might want to look into that one, too. I think the U.S. DOL website has all the info on that.
