I've never had to go to Nizwa but will be there in a few weeks (only know Muscat and Sur). I'm staying in the Falaj Daris Hotel - anyone know anything about the Hotel and Nizwa in general? For the hotel I'm really asking if the bar is Musact style (like any other capital in the world) or Sur style (seedy).

Also, I've got a day off - where should I go for the day?

The Falaj Daris is a very pleasant place, with two bars - one very expensive and swanky and one cheap and cheerful, with dancing girls.

And for the day off, if you drive, get a big car and go up Jebel Shams. Second biggest canyon in the world.

I stayed there a couple of times when I was in Oman; a pleasant enough place with the common set up of a bar by the pool and one tucked away round the side for the Lebanese entertainers. I think it's owned by the police! Other places of interest not too far away from Nizwa are Bahla and Jabrin. I presume the reference to seedy bars in Sur is to the Sur Beach Hotel. If it's still in operation there is a hotel in Muscat, down the hill from the Crowne Plaza called the Qurum Beach or similar which compares well in terms of seediness.

The best show in town (Nizwa) used to be the goat market on Friday. The Bahla goat market is pretty lively to. If goats and people selling, holding, foddling goats isn't your idea of a good time, I'd also recommend getting up into the Jabel. The view from on top of Jabel Shams down into the "Grand Canyon of Arabia" is definitely good but even better in my opinion is the view UP from the bottom.

Of course you really need someone to show you how to get places as the roads/tracks can be either poorly or ambigiously marked. Expats tend to give people directions like "Drive until you see the big tree then turn left on the dirt track." Problem is the tree might only be 5 feet tall but it's the only tree for miles and there's a dirt track doing somewhere every ten yards!
