Hey Abu,

If these guys had the qualifications and experience you had (i.e. 20+ years, PhD, etc.), they probably wouldn't have to go through such rigorous procedures I think!

There are more applicants wanting to work at these language schools than actual positions, I have heard of people waiting months in order to get in with ______ school!

Actually Gordon I can remember my dad (who worked in the health industry) saying that he was amazed at how many times he was contacted as a reference for people that he had fired!

SEndrigo, good point! I'm sure that most of us applying to AEON had little to no teaching experience in our resumes. Of course a lot of what schools of that ilk are looking for is not about experience and qualifications but about personality and how whether they think you are able to be molded into what they wish, something that is probably only going to come across in an interview.

I don't think people are really 'waiting' for a position with these schools, we were told that those of us successful in getting through the application procedure should not expect to depart until around April next year. The reasons behind this are the length of the visa processing and so on and linked to this is the fact that they usually only know which positions will be open beginning from the six month point as that is the contract renewal period (they do offer some people three month extensions but if someone refused a 3 month extension and they tried to replace them with a newbie I guess they would risk not having all the paperwork etc done in time). Of course if someone really wants to go to a certain area, particularly Tokyo they may want to wait for a position to open up there.

Of course, I didn't start out with these qualifications. Initially I was just as raw as any beginner and I got a lot of rejection letters to job applications before I finally hooked up with a job in Saudi Arabia through a personal contact with one of my Saudi students in the US.

As far as why I haven't had to do the interview thing too many times, I think part of it is that more people are considering a stint as an overseas English teacher than was the case when I started out.

I got a call from Aeon this afternoon. They said that they are waiting for one of my referees to get back to them and that they will contact me again next week. Sounds promising! Very Happy

Cheers! Apparently, because I have lived in Japan twice before, Aeon have to get references from both of my former Japanese employers, despite the fact that one of the jobs was quite a long time ago. They said they have one, but not the other and I wasn't to worry as it was all down to time differences between the US and Japan. Fingers crossed!

Actually that concurs with the thought I just had, my personal reference is in the United States as well so perhaps they contacted me more quickly than everyone else because my referees would have been quite easy for them to get hold of.

Sounds good Dipso, congratulations.

I'm getting more pessimistic. I wish they'd just give me the job or put me out of my misery Sad .

I'm going to apply for NOVA. I really wish AEON had given me some feedback.

Well good luck with NOVA! One of the things that Kayoko told me I did well during the mock lesson was that I came across as very friendly and encouraging, of course she may have said the same thing to everyone Razz but I think that is something that they really look for. I tried to make sure I was really enthusiastic about everything she told me and that everything was not a problem; Teaching kids? No worries. Selling books? Nothing I haven't done before. Etc etc.

I think I managed to be friendly and encouraging and Motoko did say as much. I just think I was a bit nervous and subdued and didn't come across as energetic enough and didn't get out all of the things I wanted to say. I'm sure I ticked the committed and flexible boxes.
