let's make it a triptych(or a hat-trick)...

Very Happy I loved the tea "gardens" by the bosphorus(Beşiktaş,Dolmabae). I loved sitting on one of those small crap stools, having a tea and toast on a rusty table, watching the ferries... especially as the sun went down. It wasn't so comfortable but I felt it was a real Istanbul experience-what the locals like- not tourist blah de blah.

I love the tea garden at the base of the Galata Tower, as I can sit and watch both locals and tourists and know that I am part of the colour of the square.

I used to love walking Istiklal Cadd, but it is a freakin' mess these days and I wish I had some hipboots to get through the muck.

I love taking the ferry to the other side (and back). I suppose a ferry is a place, eh?

I used to love the upstairs part of the cicek bar/restaurant (now Evin) in Bakirkoy, even if it had the appearance of a motorway greasy spoon, simply cos the quality of the food and service were so good.
I also loved the Dilhan, also known as the Fish Bar, now defunct, also in Bakirkoy, which was the watering hole of choice for around fifty beer-thirsty TEFLers every tuesday night. It was unspeakably filthy and cheap, and we sat on great long tables, shouting and watching the brood of kittens racing round the netting that festooned the ceiling by way of ornament.

Is Karga still there? Wow! Does it still have tacky posters of alpine scenes and boss-eyed kittens everywhere?

Wow, Karga with alpine scenes and kitten posters--- nooooo, it must have changed. It's all dark wood with wrought iron light fixtures and fireplaces now, no pictures to speak of. Kind of reminds me of Waxy O'Connor's basement pub in London in Rupert Street--lots of dark nooks and crannies to hide in.

I'll have to concur with you on that one. Karga is the best bar in Istanbul. It's refreshing to be able to sit in a bar and actually enjoy the music being played.

Although, it HAS to be a beer for me. I'll look out for you next time I'm there.

(cue Baba goign up to someone drinking red wine and reading the guardian saying 'hi I'm Baba!' and getting slapped'
