Anyone had a chance to sample the local eggnog, called rompope here?

I picked up a couple of bottles at a fair that featured products from various Mexican states in DF last month...there's a place in Jalisco that makes really good stuff. Almond flavoured is my favorite.

I also tried Nopal juice..the pure stuff. Vile. It tasted like an ashtray. Don't ask how I know what an ashtray tastes like. Just trust me on this.

It's panela dissolved in aguardiente then mixed with spices and/or fruit. The one they tend to make in Chiapas is fermented with fruit which suits my sweet tooth just fine!

I like rompope too... it reminds me more of "eirlikor" (literally egg liquor) from when I lived in Germany more than it reminds me of egg nog. Man... I should think about taking the salmonella risk and making real egg nog. Gotta live dangerously once in a while!

I like rompope in small amounts, its a much better gift from Puebla than those awful camote candies.

And nopal, mixes very nicely with grapefruit juice.

couldn't agree more. camotes are awful. i bought some as a gift and they sat in my friend's refrigerator for 2 months. they're just logs of sugar and gelatin. disgusting.

rompope really tastes nothing like eggnog. i used to buy that stuff when i lived in fortin and drink it straight from the bottle on lonely nights at home. yummy. i haven't tried nopal yet but i'll probably stay away if it tastes like an asstray. one of the most horrible egyptian dishes, which i can't spell but it starts with m, it's green, and it has the consistency of mucous, also tastes like cigarette butts. incredible but people enjoy it.
