|
|
I'm currently working in Korea and will finish my contract at the end of February. I'm thinking of going to Thailand after that.
Some of you have taught in both, South Korea and Thailand... I've read a few comments regarding the easy life in Thailand... and yet I've also read several comments regarding long working hours, no airconditioning at work and so on. Are the working hours that long? (I plan to study after work, so the duration of working hours is somewhat important)
edit: Also, in Korea I teach in elementary school, my teaching hours are numbered at 22 per week, but I have to stay in school 8 hours per day, even if I have no classes on that day (due to students leaving on field trips, exams, etc)
Given the complaints from some people, how is it better than Korea?
Aside from that, I bought several appliances in South Korea. Would they work in Thailand? Voltage power might differ in Thailand from South Korea...
I'm also going to require internet as I'm going to take some distance learning courses in university. Is it possible to order internet in any city in Thailand? Or any house for that matter?
I hope that some people will respond.
Thanks in advance. |

It isn't better than Korea.
It's just different.
I taught for a year in Chonju, Korea.
At that time I was teaching 6 days a week,
roughly 6 hours a day. It was way too much, but I was putting
$US 800 to 1,000 in the bank every month, so that was pretty cool.
In Thailand, the market is so wide and so diverse, it's simply impossible
to look into a crystal ball for you - and see what's in your future,
especially not knowing anything about your qualifications.
In terms of teaching kids: they are equally apathetic & naughty, imo.
In terms of earning potential, Korea wins; no doubt about that.
In terms of climate, food and lifestyle, Thailand wins.
It comes down to your priorities, I guess.
If you need to save money, I'd say
you'd better stay where you are.
If you wanna relax on a beach in January
or meet people & develop a social life,
or ride on the back of an elephant,
or sip fresh coconut milk ...
Thailand by all means.
You can earn a decent living in both countries.
It's just 'the flavour of the living' that differs.
Why not consider spending a week or 2 in Thailand on holiday
and see if it appeals to you - before making a firm decision?
To answer your other questions:
Your appliances will work here;
Thailand & Korea are on 220V:

Internet connections are available in all major cities & towns,
and ADSL is slowly creeping its way out into the provinces.
As for teaching hours;
that will depend entirely on
who you end up working for.
I average 20 hours per week
plus time spent commuting. |

Thanks for the response.
Money is not such a bit priority.... in fact.... I feel stressed here... and I'm not sure why... perhaps it's living in a small city that bothers me the most.... and it's getting quite cold these days. I work 8 hour per day... so spare time is not plentiful.
I think.... Thailand will do nicely... it will give me time to study, given the 5-4 hour work days, and relax at the same time.
I am hoping for more open minded people than Koreans.... more happy people as well, and people who spend less time working and more time enjoying life:) |
