Agreed!
But one who regularly cancels without advance notice, unless it is absolutely unavoidable, is not. A good school schould have a coherent, straightforward policy for what teachers need to do if they need time off. This, more than anything may help avoid teachers trying other ways to take days off.
And agreed that a doctors excuse should be sufficient for medical reasons to miss work.
But, we've all had that colleague who missed numerous days due to medical reasons that didn't merit seeing a doctor. At some point, a director may feel that he or she does have to investigate this case, and put forward a clear policy for how medical days can be excused.
My experience is that in many cases, if there is a clear, reasonable way that teachers can get needed time off, the unnecessary "sick days" seem to happen much less frequently.

Yes. Absolutely. Unfortunately there are some parts of the world- notably Indonesia and even here in Damascus - where doctor's notes are a ten a penny. Such doctors have no qualms about doing 'favours' for their 'patients'.
Doctor: Looks like a slight cold. Perhaps a day off in bed ?
Patient:Could you make sound more serious, doc .. like bronchitis ?? (nudge, nudge, knowhatimean) - 6 days 'in bed' ?
I still believe that if there's any doubt about authenticity of sickness claims and frequent days off due to sickness, the employer should be able at some point to request that the employee see a physician of the employer's choice in order to get a clearer and confirmed picture of the problem.

Good point about subsitutes being available. Some schools don't have a subsitute proogram, which makes for big headaches foir makeup classes if the regular teacher can't make it,or the class is usually just cancelled.
Of course, if you have a medical condition that sometimes requires time off, so be it. I am speaking more about regular absences due to oversleeping and late night drinking. It's true, one can not always easily differentiate 'true' illnesses from just people who are 'not fit' to teach that day.
I would think even in the public sector, covering for the missing teachers is not always routine, it can be problematic. I think the big difference as a teacher is that we have clients waiting to met us, and we can't normally reschedule meetings unless absolutly necessary. My opinion is more concerned with university classes (though this could be extended to elementary, junior high, or high school classes), if we're talking about language schools, where there usually is no assigned teacher to a particular group or individual lesson, then it's not as major of a problem, as long as a sub can be arranged to teach (or a class might be cajoled from one of the teachers who is willing to sacrifice a free period). Just don't expect to be paid or to avoid 'lectures' from your manager if you keep no showing on short notice. |
