I'm sure we all know there's an election on in Canada. Could someone please let us lazy people to know how to go about voting over here? I'm sure it involves going to the Canadian embassy, but when should I go, how much ID should I be bringing with me, and how exactly do I get there from Ikebukero?
Also who u voting for? I'm an up and up Liberal supporter but to be perfectly honest I think they've been in office for too long. |

Be careful before you decide to vote. Among other things, you have to declare you are planning to return to Canada in the near future and that in turn compromises your tax situation. You may end up being declared a resident for income tax purposes and that could be very expensive. An email to the Canadian Embassy would clarify things for you. |

I'm afraid I too agree with ESLteach555's comments. Voting in Canada's elections is a right of all Canadian citizens, HOWEVER it is also restricted to those persons who INTEND to reside in Canada at some point in the future (if they currently do not).
As such, registering to vote MAY affect your non-residency status for income tax purposes.
In short, if you plan on staying abroad for a while (and want to keep your non-residency) then you can't vote. Yes, it sucks.... I remember this discussion the last time Canada hit the polls. The thread is probably still up here on Dave's somewhere. If I find it, I'll post the x-link.

I was told the same thing. What a stupid rule. |
