Well the time is almost upon us and that means out with the old and in with the new ,so what resolutions are you going to try to implement and hopefully carry out in 2006 ?
For me my first has to be to stop allowing myself to be baited by the likes of certain people on this forum . In addition some or all of the following
Be kinder to my students (if possible )
Try not to take the job so seriously
Be a better partner to my lady
lose weight
get fit
get a dog
travel more
drink less ( )
get on better with the boss
learn another language .
What about you ? |

try it the other way round molly - lose smoking and quit weight: a far more metaphysical concept. |

Well every year I keep making my resolutions, only to see them go up in smoke with the first smoke of the new year. This year it's differnet.
The A list
1. Be the best farther I can be.
2. Be the best husband I can be.
3. Be the best friend I can be.
4. Loss at least 15 kgs
5. Earn & Save more money.
6. Cut back to no more than 4 smokes a day ( I'm at 8 now)
7. Buy a new Car.
8. Take my son back to O.Z for short hoilday before 2006 is out.
If I can get half of the a List then I'm on fire.....
The B list
1. Try to spend less time on this thing.
2. Don't repond to any half wit who knows jack all about the place.
3. Try to enjoy what 31/Mark/and Barry have to say.
4. Try to make it to aleast one Quiz night ( thats if their still going on)
5. Stop working on Sundays.
6. After all this is done I will try to be the type of the teacher most of the schools and students I work with have a right to expect. (Jake all)
Non of the above will happen, but I can dream. |

Last year on January 1, 2005, ghost weighed 83.5 kilos (184 pounds/13 stones)
for a height of 6 feet 2 inches (1.88cm).
Around April 2005, ghost went for a physical check up which revealed an abnormal
count for cholesterol.
Ghost went on a diet and exercise regimen from mid April 2005, and by July 2005
was down to 74 kilos (163 pounds/11.6 stones).
One year later (December 30, 2005) ghost is in Taichung, Taiwan, and still only
tips the scales at around 72-73 kilos. The ghost intends keeping that weight
for the rest of its life.
How did ghost do it?
1. Diet: No more cokes or carbonated beverages.
2. Switch from black tea to green tea. No milk or sugar in the tea.
3. Ghost eats six meals a day, rather than three meals. Yes - you read it right
- six meals instead of 3 meals. This means that ghost eats every 2 hours
throughout the day. Some of the meals are small snacks.
Typical diet in Taiwan:
Breakfast: two slices of bread with peanut butter and jam. bowl of oatmeal with soy milk. Cup of green tea (no sugar or milk)
Mid morning: an orange and a kiwi
Lunch: Big bowl of noodle soup with vegetables. One semi sweet bun.
Mid afternoon: Peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Bowl of oatmeal with soy milk. Cup of green tea.
Evening meal: Fish, white rice, vegetables, fruit, water
Night time snack (10pm). Bowl of oatmeal with soy milk. Chocolate about 40 grams. Cup of ovaltine with soy milk.
Ghost still has a bit of a problem with 'junk food' and eats cadburys chocolate (fruit and nut) and snickers bars. Ghost is also partial to a nice cool can of beer (Heineken or Taiwan Beer) with chips (crisps). But overall the 'ghost diet' appears to be pretty sensible.
Ghost really believes in the fat burning properties of green tea, and it (ghost) is testament to the beneficial effects of the brew in terms of losing weight. Others should try.
Exercise
The 'fatty ghost' used to run three to four times a week for 30 minutes. This
exercise was not enough.
The new exercise regimen
Ghost typically exercises for a minimum of 40 minutes to 2 and a half hours a
day.
Typical exercise in Taichung, Taiwan.
8am - 30 minutes 'wake up' run.
9am - cycle 8km to University in 22 minutes.
3pm -(after classes) 2km swim in the 50m pool at the University, in 49 minutes.
6pm - cycle 8km back to home in 22 minutes.
As you can see each exercise routine only lasts from 20-50 minutes, but are
repeated several times a day, rather than doing one big chunk of exercise.
The ghost philosophy to exercise is to simply incorporate it into the day, and
use a bike instead of a car or scooter for transport.
Ghost found out that it (ghost) can arrive at the school in a quicker time (door
to door) when using the bike rather than taking public transport (the bus)
because the bus always involves waiting, and then involves many stops en route
to the University - so on all counts, ghost comes out the winner, in terms of
money saved and as an investment to overall health.
With regard to exercise - the metabolism really starts burning fat at around 40
minutes, or in chunks of less time, if done several times a day.

In the bazaars of the orient there are persistent rumours that ghost is about to return to Istanbul.
Will ghost confirm or deny these rumours ? |

It would be quite tempting to return to Turkey, which has a lot to offer, despite some of the frustrations which one went through....but it is only by working in other places and comparison shopping that one realizes (in retrospect) that some places are in actual fact quite good....
But, ghost has some unfinished business in Asia, and would like to explore the possibility of living and working in Indonesia.
The only reason ghost has stayed on in Taiwan, is to avail of the Chinese language course at the University which is being taken every day, for 6 months (2 hours a day). Ghost works as well, but took a huge salary cut, when it resigned from a lucrative High School contract in the Taichung area. The reason for the resignation will be outlined at a later date.
Chinese is an intriguing language to learn, and extremely challenging....and anyone who masters basic conversation and writing in Mandarin deserves credit....because the learning process is so frustrating for foreigners...especially with the tones....which are very difficult to master, especially in the first 3 months, resulting in a huge attrition rate for Mandarin (foreign) learners.
But, ghost does not like living in Taiwan.....but it is a learning experience and one which will be stored in the memory bank, for future overall perspective.
