Lets hear them.. Cool

I have almost ZERO.

Went to FUKUOKA once and drank two nights at HAPPY COCK.. bunch of expat western english teachers from Korea on visa runs.. no Japanese around.

Went to KYOTO and hit the bars there.. ended up walking around drinking from vending machines with some other foreigners.. went to PIG WHISTLE or something like that.. very uneventful.

Where are the good places in Osaka or Tokyo or elsewhere.. and what were the experiences.. I'm inching for some stories here on Japanese nightlife!

I've been there 5 times now on short visa runs.. but my experiences always amount to vending machine drinking following by an uneventful drink or two in a pig&whistle type place or something.. what have I been missing?

sorry, i should add.

I don't live in Japan.

I live in Seoul and have had a few visa runs just for a day or two at a time in Japan.. but never seem to find anything interesting while there.. at least not in Kyoto or Fukuoka anyways.

What are you looking for?

Hill of Tara, Irish pub in Oike dori (10 minute walk from P& W, subway, Shiyakushomae station) has live Irish Music some nights.

I go to Taghs in Shijo which has great Irish food and music. A little hard to find but its right next to Shijo Keihan station.

Pig and Whistle is a bit stale IMO.

In Tokyo, I would recommend What the Dickens, Tokyo's largest live house/pub. Some of the acts are crap, but they are most active live house, and the mix of music from bluegrass to rock should give you possibilities. Ben's cafe in Takadanobaba has poetry readings and bi-weekly changing photography and paintings exhibted inside as well.

Sorry, can't recommend anything in Fukuoka (never been there) and Kyoto (I don't usually bar hop there).

Some nice pubs to have a drink at around Tokyo:

Shimokitazawa:
- Heaven's Door

Shinjuku:
- Clubhouse
- Dubliners
- Hub (the fake British pub)

Takadanobaba:
- The Fiddler

Shibuya:
- Gas Panic
- Pin Cow

Ikebukaro:
- Blacksheep

Rappongi:
- Geronimo
- Gas Panic / 99 (Y400 all you can drink on Thursdays!)
