i don't happen to be gay, and i've only been here a few weeks... but my real estate guy is definitely very gay and openly lives with his partner and are clearly open. once i got here he gave me a "gay map of buenos aires" which i was walking around with for a few days before realizing what it was (actually a good map, the only thing "gay" about it were the ads around the back). i didn't really care exactly but i didn't want the ladies thinking i wasn't available ! I also had a gay fellow, fairly obviously gay, try to chat me up at an event, he didn't seem to worry about it. Actually he did successfully chat me up, but I think he also realized I wasn't gay. Also, in some crowds I've been with (not "gay" per se), men give each other that cheek kiss that all women do here, with men and with each other. Even Manhattan at its most pretentiously "euro" and trying to be "sophisticated" doesn't do that! So basically I haven't found this town to be hyper macho gay bashing type of place. Like anywhere I'm sure finding some gay bashing thugs isn't impossible, but from what I can tell they'd probably be more interested in your wallet and watch than your proclivities. Civil union i have no idea and would doubt, but i've no idea. Note that abortion isn't even legal here, so I doubt if they're about to run out and legislate gay marriage... not that the two are necessarily connected. |

Thanks for the info, jdq. I appreciate it. Seems like BsAs will be fine for me. My boyfriend has slowly been coming out to all his friends, and so far, everyone's been completely supportive. And that's in Quilmes ... not uber-trendy Palermo. His family probably will not approve at all, but it seems that my generation (I'm 23) is becoming pretty accepting. It's the same in my case. My parents don't approve at all, but all my friends are fine with it.
I'm glad you can be a good sport about gay men chatting you up. Honestly, let it boost your ego because it almost certainly means that you're good-looking and friendly.
P.S. Actually, gay civil unions are legal in BsAs. |

Well, Matt, having seen a picture of you ... I would say yes.
But the fact that you've got pounds, not pesos, in the bank may have something to do with it, too. LOL jk |

Hi, REDLEY here again, for some reason my first account was desactivated. Bummer.
1. Yes, you can enter a civil union in Ciudad de Buenos Aires (Capital) since the law includes same sex partners. You must comply with a minimum of 2 years term of the relationship before being able to be united.
2. It will give you NO rights under Federal law (taxation, immigration, etc.) so it doesnt equal "marriage". In other words, the civil union wont help you get residency (immigration) nor tax benefits or any other benefit included in federal laws.
3. Try to get your residency as a "rentista" (only if you plan to live here for a minimum of one year).
We are evolving towards same sex marriage, specially after SPAIN adopted it...but dont really know when that will happen.
Good luck. |

I hope to God that gay marriage gets legalized here in Argentina so that I can get legal. I mean, I know it's not that bad being "illegal" here, but I certainly don't want to be illegal for years and years.
Sadly, I can't apply as a rentista because I don't have a pension that equals the requisite $2,500 pesos a month. |

Mmmmm...I know you dont have a AR$ 2.500 (u$s 830) a month income from the US to be eligible for a rentista residency, and you know that as well.....BUT.....do they (DNM = INS) know that? ))). No, They dont.
There are always tricks and I am not talking about bribe.
bend it...bend it ! dont break it....The effort is worth only if you plan to be here long term, if not, its not worth it to do all the efforts just for a couple of months.
PM me. Good luck. |

There may be no Gay Marriage per se down here, but hey, something must be working allright...I dont think ʹve ever met and seen so many gays and transvestites in my entire life since Ive been to BA and Crdoba!
None of this is too surprising I guess, considering that Buenos Aires is now considered by some as the New Mecca of gay tourism in south America: http://espanol.news.yahoo.com/050309/2/yj4y.html
Fabulous ! |
