there used to be some rule that you cud claim the exit 'fiskal' back at the end of the fiscal year - tax deductable. id be interested in hearing whether anyone has ever succeeded. to me, it was a complete waste of time, money and energy to even attempt something so futile.

There is something about this on expat.or.id but by the sounds of it the process is likely to cost you more than it's worth and open up lots of opportunities for the taxman to get his revenge. As you say, futile. |

How much do you have to pay to leave the country and come back? I'm considering teaching in Indonesia so I'd like to know. |

An Angry President Puts Immigration on Notice
SBY Orders Immigration Officers to Improve Service and Clean Up Corruptors or Else!
(12/17/2005) As reported in most Indonesian daily newspapers this week, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is clearly fed up with poor service and numerous reports of corrupt practice by the Nation's immigration corps. Putting immigration on official notice "to stop embarrassing Indonesia," Yudhoyono has issued orders to the Justice and Human Rights Ministry to immediately clean up the immigration department which forms a part of that Ministry's portfolio.
Speaking in Kuala Lumpur, the President said: "I want an immediate clean up of immigration. Investigate and reform! Those discovered to be involved in criminal activities must be vigorously prosecuted. We cannot tolerate this. Nobody in our country is allowed (to make immigration) into a money making body."
To move forward with his plan for a general clean up of the Country's immigration agencies the President has ordered the National Head of Police, the Minister of Justice and Human Rights and the Minister of Manpower and Transmigration to get busy and reform immigration services, involving the Attorney General in the team if needed.
The President's considerable ire on the subject has seemingly been provoked by feedback he has received directly from foreign businessmen who have complained of illegal levies and roughshod treatment when passing through immigration. |

This rule has been around for years but nobody ever knows about and even if they do they don't worry about it.
The funny thing is it is usually the police at your destination who may get stroppy if you don't have one. The bottom line is they are almost never asked for and I believe that when I checked at the South Jakarta police head office they actually issue the Surat Perjalanan for free.
Try contacting them if you can to get more info. They have an office there that deals specificaly with foriegners. |

I went over to Sumatra during the Christmas break no problems. When I did my first Tour of Duty in Indonesia a few years ago, I traveled allover the country and never had any problems associated with 'papers'.
I was advised to carry both my KITAS card & also my Police registration card when travelling. That's it. |

same here team papua..i travelled almost all around the country...just for pleasure not for business...and i always had my KITAS wth me...i sometimes ignored police registrtaion which i know i sould not...but neverthless i never had a problem so far....no official ever stopped me to ask about my papers...only in papua i had to report to the police to get 'surat jalan' to travel inlands and this is a normal procedure applied to all visiting inlands of papua (baliem valley).
but apparantly one needs a special letter from the police if they r travelleing for business purposes... that i found out checking the net. |
