i heard that there is a village near Yelapa [called Chacala] where the locals brew "moonshine," called Raicilla; it is popular in Yelapa, tho' i haven't tried it yet
if you go to Yelapa, the locals will know the details
i've heard it has a pretty good punch

Indeed there is! I've been clued into it of late by my brother-in-law. There's a place in Cuauhtemoc, close the Angel of Independence, another on Revolucion (that I haven;t seen yet) and an English pub in Condesa that has jazz nights.
A real treat here though is live Cuban music...mostly merengue and salsa but man what a swing. |

hola, Ajarn,
i was in Puerto Vallarta and Yelapa in late May and early June in 2004 -- PV was as hot and humid as Houston, Texas [yikes! nasty!] and Yelapa was more comfortable with good breezes
stay wet, go boating |

| How much money do you think you might need to bring for spending between 6-8 weeks travelling in Mexico, mixing between the usual hotspots and off the beaten track? |

| Mexico is pretty vast, so that would really depend on how much traveling you do. Minimum $1000 usd for 6-8 weeks, more if you long haul on busses. General rule for pricing busses in Mexico is every half hour of travel is about 50-60 pesos. Hotels or hostels run anywhere from 100 to 500 pesos per night, none of them 5-star. |
