I'm trying to figure out how many foreigners are currently teaching in Taiwan. Furthermore, what percentage of foreigners are South African, Canadian, American etc. Any ideas? Can anyone point me in the right direction? |

I don't know of any truly definitive statistics. However, Scott Sommers who blogs extensively on English teaching and education issues in Taiwan has some estimates.
In this post he estimates there are 10,000 foreign teachers in Taiwan. I suspect this is an underestimate, though I wouldn't be willing to speculate on the real number. In this post he gives some numbers from which you might be able to infer the proportion of teachers by nationality. If you read through Scott's English Teachers as Migrants archive you might find some more analysis on the issues.
Here is some information about the number of foreigners living in Taiwan. It says there are 6,831 foreign teachers. |

I know that there are 20,000 Canadian passport holders in Taiwan, many of these are Taiwanese Canadians, and many are expats just working, there is no central figure that records these kinds of stats....it is just guesses from everyone.... |
