I hopped over to the general dis forum and saw an optomistic soul had posted a thread , get this ,"Awesome students" rose coloured glasses or what ?
Call me a cyncial old s.o.b if you like but when was the last time a student left you in a state of awe, well yes every day ,usually because they arrive incredibly late and expect to be allowed to join the class despite the fact they haven't got a book or heaven forbid a pencil ,I am gobsmacked at their lack of talent or any inate god given nounce that usually leaves me in a state of shock rather than awe.
The nearest to a miracle occured when a student told me he would do his home work ad post it to me via the net which he did ,it was totally crap but at least he got it to me but ask him to fetch a board marker from the office and hes gone half the lesson .So how about you are you amazed or amused by your students ?
Now that the first term is drawing to a close I'm amazed to still find them coming to class ,don't do much but then whats new ?

wow billy, you are sour on teaching. You should either change jobs to have different students or find some other kind of work. I love teaching and although I am sometimes frustrated by students, I like to teach them and learn from them. But then I have always taught adults. If you are not enjoying teaching, your students are surely not enjoying it either.

One of my most poignant memories, a sort of miracle, is a presentation a Vietnamese student did in a speaking class in the US. He taught us how to get fresh water from fish in the ocean-- learned when he and his family fled Viet Nam by boat. That was a miracle.

Let's hear some positive posts about teaching and students Very Happy

Don't get me wrong Molly like you I get a lot out of this job and 99% of the kids are ok too ,no I'm not sour or twisted just a bit jaded with the same old routine and working with people as well as students who never cease to disappoint . Merely an observation that might invoke a response ,which it appears to have done .

Only about 50% of the young adults/students are O.K. at the place I try to teach and this is being generous. I am still in shock at the type of students at this educational institution. I agree most of them need to be in an institution but this is the wrong type.. hehe Twisted Evil
This place is full of idiots and losers. I feel really sorry for the few students that actually want to learn something.. or practice speaking English. Luckily for me, I still teach adult business people and this is really enjoyable because they want to learn.. or atleast put forth some effort. This classroom setting is where I will meet many of the young adult losers and idiots when they get into the working world and realize they messed up their chance to learn English..and learn to speak English. When I meet them the second time, I will ask them, Well, how do you like me now? Twisted Evil Twisted Evil
