I'm interested in what people charge for giving private lessons. And what factors determine the price.

I have a few private students and I generally charge 40PLN for 1 hour. I heard the going rate is 50PLN but I'm happy charging 40 and so are my students. It's mainly for conversational English with some grammar aspects and phrasal verbs too.

For professionals, I charge 1 zl per minute. For students, I charge the same then knock off 10%. This is in Poznan and I think it's about the going rate here.

Like afowles, I charge about that per min, tho I never really calculate it per min. So 60zl p/h [clock]. I give small discounts if they take two hours per week. Also I'm open to REASONABLE negotiation.

The trouble is, Poles who have money, often don't have time, and those who have time, don't have money.

I refuse to work for nothing though. I've heard of someone who tutors his students for free as otherwise they don't come... bah!

Also I live in Torun, and here we have a lot of students, so it's really hard to charge them 60zl per hour, so I give students a lesser rate, but it depends on my gut instinct.

Also, a friend of mine said that sometimes ppl have more respect for your work if you charge a decent or higher rate, rather than undercutting yourself.

I think that basically you have to quote a price and then it's up to them if they like it or not. You can go from there.

I would usually charge 40zl if it's at a time convenient for me. Otherwise it'd be 50zl or 55zl if they're the kind of person who cancels a lot. I hate private lessons so will rarely bother.

Im similar to cheeseandegg - I usually charge 50zl - more if the person is unreliable, less if the student pays for a bulk quantity of lessons. I cant stand privates though, and only take them on in the summer months when the school shuts. Generally these privates are workers from the companies I teach who want individual extras, or members of their immediate family.

I used to charge 50.

Yet due to all the last minute cancellations I pretty much phased out doing privates.

Although you don't make as much at a school I've always found groups more interesting anyway.

I think if I were going to do it again I'd have them pay me at the beginning of the month and charge them for a lesson if they didn't give me 24 hour or some reasonable amount of notice.

I also like the idea of charging less for 2 lessons a week.

I've also considered charging less for 2 people. Afterall it's less work as a teacher and it's easier to keep the conversation going.

I once charged 2 people for the price of 1 and the hour was over before I knew it.

Well, quicker than usual anyway.
