The only thing I've yet to find an answer to: will it ever be necessary while teaching in HCMC to wear a suit? I don't want to bring one, but if there's a good chance I'll need one at some point I'll bring it along.

No-one wears a bloody suit to teach English mate. A shirt and tie is the most any school asks for. It's too impractical for the climate and no-one expects it.
If you absolutely must wear a suit then they are available here for a cheap price. |

You can get a suit made in Saigon for very little money. I'd take as few clothes as possible, and get shirts/trousers etc there- i get my work clothes made up in linen from a tailor, cos it's hot and you don't sweat in linen. |
