So 2,600 RMB for someone with a degree and a TEFL/TESOL certificate. Who qualifies for the 3,000 RMB salary? Someone with a couple years of experience? I think they are looking for third-world FT's and backpacker FT's.
[ADDED] Now let's do the math. At 2,600 RMB/month teaching 14 hours a week plus 2 hours of office work, that's 40.625 RMB/hour. At 3,000 RMB, that's 46.875 RMB/hour. So,

Let's say the FT is willing to teach more than 14 hours a week and does end up negotiating for more hours for a higher pay, would he/she take the job? I think so -- even if it's in Beijing -- a city with a very high cost-of-living.

| ya I worked there for less . 2,500. New Bridge . You won't find them listed they deal with recruiters . No one is responsible . You are the third person in the cue to catch your money . First the recruiter next the school and third the person they farm you out to. All a beautiful scheme set up by Peter Armstrong from Canada. |

| Worked for a kindergarden in guchenglu (beijing) the last three months. 12 hours a week,for 3500 a month.This was discussable.I'm making more with other freelance jobs here so I don't mind the low payment too much.. |

| If there is someone out there that doesnt know the going rate then they may take it. They try! If you were selling a 10 dollar CD that on Ebay and you listed the price as $500, you never know if someone might take you up on that. |

I MIGHT go to Beijing for that salary.Not to a private Acadamy certainly but to a public school yes.
It seems beyond some people that money is not the only factor. If $$ is akll you care about why be inPRC in the first place. Stay home---or look at Japan or whatever.
A soft hours job in Beijing? Why not?
PS- I get a kick out of people borderline unemployable at home cring about low salaries to "teach." |

dearest lagerlout maybe it has never crossed your mind but there are some of us who are trying to make a living out here through teaching - folk who don't perticularly want to go to Japan or certainly have no interest in staying at home - so money is kinda important - people coming over here undercutting the wages by 50% so they can get an "experience" does get up a few noses - but what the hell there is always beer and cheers:)

| It is not a question of money , but I am adamantly opposed to the thinking that Rr has that we should come here with lots of money in case something goes wrong . I am here not to teach ,but to help the countries economic rise ? Is that what we are here for Rr? |

Of course, it is always wrong to be prepared for emergencies - the CHinese police will voluntarily put you up in a five-star hotel if you do a midngiht runner and find yourself cash-strapped; also the hoteliers here will hire you to train their cleaning women and pay you 10'000 upfront for the first week of training.

To recognize that a white face equates a higher salary for the same job...is not racism..it is market awareness..
if you want a profession that caters to training and not market..try working a certified primary school and not a Chinese language school or ESL employment... |

He just said money wasn't the only factor. I think few people who think for a few minutes before they post would disagree with that comment.
I'm sure the reason the salary is so low is because they have had no problems finding people in previous years. The workload is not heavy, you'd be working at a relatively prestigious institution with, one would hope, pretty good students, and you would have a work visa and accommodation (probably with internet and free utilities) provided for you. Ideal for the young or old seeking a "China experience", but not so good for those of us who are not just out of college/retired. |

High compared to most other Chinese cities, that is.
As long as rent and utilities are taken care of by employers, and you've made the effort to learn Mandarin, you'd be living on at least as much as most middle class Beijingers/Shanghaiers make, and they live pretty nicely.
Not that I'd take up a 3000, or a 6000 job, anywhere. I've got the experience and qualifications and market myself accordingly. |
