I've been looking at jobs all over the world. And, of course, all the ads post the salary in the native currency. The first thing I do is try to find out how much a beer costs in that city and it that way I try to estimate quality of life.
For example, I believe that rent for a small, furnished flat in a place should run you about the cost of 100 beers (in a bar, of course). I also think that somewhere around 8 beers per hour is a good wage.
Thoughts? |

Sounds a lot like the Big Mac index, where the cost of a Big Mac in relation to local salaries is used to decide the cost of living in a country. Can't say I really care about the cost of anything that Maccas sells but it is a neat way to get an overview. Personally I just need to know that I can afford my weekly supply of chocolate.

5 to 8 beers an hour for a regular teacher. (but the beers are BIG) Room in a shared flat, 50 beers. Small flat, for one person, 80 to 120 beers. Pizza for one 2 to 5 beers.
Chocolate is harder to calculate. Good chocolate is generally imported in this chocolate producing country. Terrible chocolate is cheap, but if you're into quality, a good chocolate bar will cost 1 to 3 beers...
Welcome back, PT,

I would've thought that the same could be said of beer!

An hour's teaching gets me about 13 beers (in a cheapish local bar).
My rent costs me a whopping 175 beers! (Rent is really out of proportion in Romania)
A meal for two in a reasonable restaurant with a bottle of wine: 28 beers
A pizza: 4 beers
Monthly city travel card: 11 beers |

Expand the scale a bit! I can buy 15 beers at a decent pub here for an hour's work.
Here are my expenses in Premium local beers (approximately):
Rent, electricity, etc: 400 beers
family expenses (food, clothes, etc.): 500 beers
gas: 30 beers
public transport (long commute): 60 beers
my food: 50 beers
a good meal in a decent restaurant (per person): 6 beers
gross salary: 1500 beers |

Teaching 20 hours a week my salary per hour can buy me the following
10 bottles of Chang at happy hour in Gullivers OR
20 cans of various lagers from a 7-11 OR
2 alcoholic drinks at a swish nightclub or rooftop 5 star hotel bar. |

What am I missing here?
In my salary, even doing conservative math (monthly salary times 12 months divided by 52 weeks, divided by 5 days divided by 8 hours work a day - and if I just calculated teaching hours, it would be a lot more money), I can buy 31 beers (2 kuai for a bottle of good, local beer at either a market or the hot pot restaurant where I go, and they're BIG BOTTLES), and an entry-level teacher in his first three months can buy 14. That's higher than the poll goes! What am I doing wrong, or do we get paid THAT well?? |

Oh yeah, one other possibility - beer is maybe just absurdly cheap here. |

I think you're right. Chinese beer must just be very cheap. Is it quite good? Coz Polish beer is really nice. |

If I calculate beer from bottles I drink at home I can get anywhere from 30 for really good bottled beer to 50 for pretty good beer from the bottle to 100 beers for cheap stuff. All .5 liter bottles. |
