Have any of you actually seen them? A friend sent them to me and most of them are not so bad, though a couple stretch the limits. I read an article that pointed out that thisviolent protests show the lack of understandiing of democracy and freedom of the press. What do you think?
There have been lots of police around Taksim, but I am glad that in general Turks have been pretty calm about it, knock wood. |

Stretch the limits of what? Your belief that people can whip up such hatred over nonsense?
Have a look in any major Arabic daily at the cartoons they print. The level of anti-Semitism and suchlike makes these cartoons seem very inoffensive indeed. |

The salient difference between the Danish cartoons and the anti-Semitic, Holocaust-mocking cartoons in the Islamic media is one of relious belief. I don't believe you can find islamic cartoons mocking the central figures of Christianity: Jesus, Abraham, Paul, David. The Prophet is in a whole different category to the Holocaust surely? |

apparently now there is a contest in iran to draw their own caricatures and they are pretty bad.
I think the whole fuss is shameful on both sides. |

Im shocked and distressed that Turkey uses the name of one of our most sacred birds in such a disrespectful manner. |

According to the news Danish products are being thrown out everywhere.
Now is the time for a smart Turk to run an add for 'Helal' milk or cheese. |

So because it's not religous it's okay? I actually think that mocking the Holocaust is much worse than mocking a prophet.
Plus the central idea of Christianity is that Jesus is not a prophet bu the son of God, which Islam denies, which many people find insulting.
Mind you I think that all those bleating free speach are as stupid and reactionary as those protesting about the cartoons. A good publication should have some sort of Jornalistic discipline, self-editing or what-not.
Thank God I'm an athiest. |

I agree that as these things go it seems much more indecent to satirize the murder of millions than to satirize a religous figure, but there's more than one Holocaust. There's the one we respect, planned and executed by Hitler and his cronies in which millions died, and there's also the one used by the state of Israel to wring billions in mostly military aid from the US and to provide discursive support internationally for its morally bankrupt policies toward Palestinians. Which version does the Islamic press mock? |

Sure, and good point. The reason WHY the holocaust is held with respect in the west is the massive Jewish lobby. Muslims don't have that kind of influence in west, so of course they protest to have their voices heard. And they are right to do so.
However, I doubt that the antisemitism in the Muslim world is merely down to Israel. And if it is, they're not doing a very good job in backing themselves up by holocaust denial.
I think reprinting the pictures is a fucking scandal though. Idiots |

the cartoons arent bad at all in my opinion. silly, and not helpful, but certainly nothing to get yourself whipped up into a frenzy about. it's just fascist muslims playing on the very low level of education many muslims have around the world. the problem with islam these days is that moderates dont stand up and denounce the type of violence these thugs carry out in the name of allah. im sure allah would be horrified. islam has and is being hijacked by these extremists and it is giving the religion an even worse name than it already has. a turkish newspaper i heard on cnn had depicted mary with a condom, hence denying the birth of jesus - someone whom they dont believe is a prophet; let alone thousands of cartoons in islamic presses about jews and the holocaust. i guess, the better the education the more civilized! |
