| Well, I didn't give it much time. The ones I saw weren't going for much of anything, and biting it. Seemed low-caliber for the Olympic Games. |

It's not really fair to talk about the poor coverage of the Olympics here in Japan. Of course any national coverage is going to cover THEIR athletes first. I remember being back home during a summer olympics and I was disappointed with the coverage because I really wanted to watch Q-chan run the marathon but in Canada there were no competitors so they didn't bother showing it on tv.
Sweetsee, you should of left the tube on a bit longer. The final 12 were ripping out there! |

There is big difference between covering your athletes first and only covering your athletes. When was the last time you saw Japan profile an athlete that is not Japanese? CBC does this all the time which is what makes the games that much more interesting since face it, 90% of the top athletes in the world come from other countries. Sadly, the Japanese are not interested in non-Japanese athletes, so I don't blame NHK. They give em what they want. |

Yes, Canada does, but where are most Canadians from? Ever been in Toronto during a World Cup? I've seen more Italian flags while trying to cross the street on Yonge St. in Toronto after an Italian win during the World Cup than I've seen since these Olympic Games have begun.
There is an international interest in Canada. I may not be from, say, Slovakia, but my neighbour in Canada is so I'd be interested to see a profile of a Slovak athlete on the CBC. The audience simply isn't here in Japan for that. |

Over course there is a bias, and in Canada, there is too. However, as biased as Japan is to Japanese athletes, America is to their own. They don't ONLY cover Japanese athletes. |

Gordon is dead on, have you all forgotten the previous Summer Olympics?
I nearly threw myself from the 5th floor of my hotel room in Takatsuki, Osaka from the pathetic amount of replays that they would show of their own athletes winning medals over and over and voer again and again, and if there was some free air time...they'd show them all again.
And let's not forget the commercials in between...nothing but Japan winning again...
... but all I can say now is "way to go Canadian womens hockey team!!"

I said nothing about being biased. Every country is biased and no one can begrudge them that. We do need to support our athletes after all.
I am saying that in Japan, the only thing that is covered or talked about is Japanese athletes. I think America is guilty of this too, but this thread is not about America. |

| What I find odd is the coverage of other countries teams simply because 1) Japan doesn't have a strong contender in that sport and 2) the athlete is Japanese-something. Case in point the American figure skating team that came in 7th. Technically it's an american team but the coverage was as if she was skating for Japan. |

| While I'm at it... does any one else find it strange that they flash the height and weight of the female athletes on the screen pre-run? I'm sure the mero-chan is a fine girl and all, but does her weight have anything to do with her snowboarding abililty? I don't recall seeing this info flashed on any of the male athletes...but perhaps I was distracted. |

You only need to have a passing connection to Japan to get coverage as Japan is desperate for good athletes.
In all defense, the woman was Japanese before she got American citizenship last year. |

Fortunately I don't think we'll be subjected to that this Winter Olympics
We may have to watch them falling and losing over and over though. |

And holding their heads. You never know when someone is really hurt.
The one guy in the men's half-pipe layed there holding his until an official came to see if he was all right. See it all the time, so weak. |

| Has anyone seen a good web site that shows highlights of Olympic events, since live broadcasts are pretty slim here? |

I just find it funny that Britain has more medal(s) than Japan. And we don`t even have winter.
In tribute to the winter Olympics I went skating for the first time in seven years last sunday. While my knees hurt a bit now I managed not to break my neck, so that was a definite result. |
